Do lisps go away? :/

Re: Do lisps go away? :/
Hi, slightly old post but I wondered if the lisp eventually went away! Ive just had braces on 3 days ago and I sound awful. I have blue stuff on my back teeth which has built them up so i dont break the brackets when i chew, but this seems to have left me with an open bite (approx 5mm) at the front and to the right, only a couple of teeth actually meet now.
I have to talk a lot in my job and my speech is so bad Im worried as my boss is not happy about it. It affects almost every sound I have to make, especially S's and C's.
So, Im wondering if the lisp is being caused by the open bite or by the actual braces, as I read that braces dont tend to give much of a lisp? And if anyone knows if this blue stuff can be removed at my next ortho visit? Im praying so much that it can be!

Hi there jo198244 and sorry for not getting back to you sooner!
Yes the lisp did eventually go, but it took 3 weeks or so and even now I hear it again occassionally especially if I'm talking to someone new. (Must make me more self conscious of braces and I try to hide them with my lips making me lisp slightly ) I think it is the bite turbos that cause the lisp, it probably means more air is escaping making a hiss. This sounds mad but what really helped me to get my normal speaking voice back was trying to talk in different accents (when I was alone I should mention! ). Strangely I found that I could talk in different accents okay but when I talked in my own the dreaded lisp came back, it's all in the way you move your lips and tongue. I know it might be hard but try and open your lips a bit more when you talk as you may be subconsciously 'hiding the braces' with your lips when you talk which really won't help either! Practising in front of a mirror also helped for some reason
