I've chewed gum with my braces in. It's not hard. Don't use a kind that gets super squishy though; so bubblelicious is out! A good firm, non-sticky gum is ok. The point is to make sure it doesn't get stuck to your brackets, so be careful while you chew.

I chew gum very sparingly now that I have my braces. But I've found them to be really helpful in working the right side of my mouth a bit. I can no longer chew on that side of the mouth, (maybe I never really could) but I feel like chewing gum helps strengthen it a bit.
