Did you have a deep bite corrected?
Hi,
I am wondering... My ortho says nothing about treating my deep bite. It is in fact deep, I am not exaggerating. This is why my dentist sent me to the ortho in the first place. She said it will be a problem as I grow older.
So, my ortho did not mention any special devices that he will add to the treatment other than just braces and elastics.
And I was stupid enough to assume that he is a good ortho and his first task will be to treat maloclusion. So I took it for granted that he would be taking care of my deep bite in addition to some cosmetic issues.
My next ajustment is in 4 weeks and I am wondering.. may be I should start looking for another ortho really?
Because what I have after two month of treatment is one of my teeth got a little bit alined, my upper arch rounded and that's good. The bad thing right now is, as I see it, absolutely nothing is going on except that my lower teeth keep errupting even more! And the reason they keep errupting is because he put braces very low on them to prevent me from knocking off the brackets with upper teeth.
If you have your deep bite treated, can you please share with me your experience? If I look for another ortho I want to know what to be prepared to and what to ask about.
Thanks for stopping by!

Re: Did you have a deep bite corrected?
My ortho didn't use any special devices to treat my deep bite. My deep bite was pretty severe so I had to wait about two months before I could get my lower braces on, and even when I did I had to have HUGE molar buildups for about four months. My ortho started with leveling and aligning and then started to work on my deep bite, and used a "pringle" wire (I think that was the nickname), which is apparently an extremely curvy wire which opens the bite by pulling the front teeth out and raising the molars slightly. I don't think I would assume your ortho is incompetent! Just ask what his plan for your deep bite is. They have to do leveling and big adjustments first, and depending on how long your projected treatment is, that could take a while.

Evilnel, thank you for sharing your experience. I will ask my ortho about that kind of "pringle wire". Did your bite ineed corrected? Did your uppers got up? did they retain their position now? Are you still in braces?

Re: Did you have a deep bite corrected?
My ortho told me she was correcting my deep bite, but as far as I know it's being done entirely with the braces (no other type of treatment). I'm about 3.5 months into treatment, and I don't think my bite has changed much. She has pushed my upper teeth out so she could put the lower braces on, my upper arch seems more rounded, and I have more space in between some of my teeth, but that's about it. Just ask your ortho about your bite- he may have just inadvertently not mentioned it to you. I've never seen a case where right after treatment a patient has beautifully aligned teeth but a huge overbite. Try not to worry and just inquire.

Re: Did you have a deep bite corrected?
You can't change the bite till the teeth are aligned properly. There a quite a few steps to go through prior to the bite. Two months into treatment and you expect your bite to be completely fixed?
Anyways, wait for your next appointment and then talk to your ortho about it. Just ask about the plan, try not to threaten about changing orthos, its kinda rude. I'm sure in your 18-24 months of treatment the bite will be taken care of.

Re: Did you have a deep bite corrected?
I do not think that the idea of being rude is relevant. I read a number of stories from people here that said that they were hoping for the best and waiting for the changes until they made all the paiments and then it was too late. But definitely changing the ortho is the last thing I want to do. I will see how next ajustment go. Last time he left so quickly I did not have a chance to ask him anything.
Here is how low the braces on my lower teeth are and the front 4 lower teeth did errupted at least a millimiter as a result of it.

If he is going to correct the deep bite then he will need to intrude them, not extrude them.

Thanks for stopping by and your encouraging. I will definitely inquire. I remember posting in your thread that our teeth look similar. Now I actually realized that you also have your lower brackets put at the very bottom of the teeth. Oh well , let me hope that if will work in the end.

Re: Did you have a deep bite corrected?
I was going to post a topic about deep bites, you beat me to it
I'll know more once my treatment gets started... but as far as I know, my ortho is planning on pushing my upper teeth up (not sure how that will happen yet). Also, I'll need elastics. I get to have fun with either a bite appliance (retainer like thing that will keep me from closing my mouth all the way) or cement on my back molars (I don't really want this option). My upper teeth need to be pushed up and out - maybe the elastics will solve the issue with the overbite - I think it'll help with the alignment on my right side.
I'll post pictures after I get the top braces next Thursday!

Re: Did you have a deep bite corrected?
I might have to ask my Ortho how he plans on correcting my overbite too.
I've seen many before and after photos of people who have had their overjet corrected with braces + elastics, but none saying how their overbite (deep bite) was corrected.
At the 2nd part of my consultation (once Ortho had decided treatment plan) I don't personally remember my Ortho talking about correcting my overbite, just that he will create an overjet so that then my lower braces could go on... And because of the overjet that's created (space between fronts of lower teeth and back of upper teeth) the upper teeth wont smash on the lower brackets. After all this is done, he said he would then pull the upper teeth/overjet backwards into place, but thinking about it, wouldn't my upper teeth then hit the brackets? Hmm... I'll have to ask when he seems not so rushed at one of my next appointments.
