How long should I wait before I get teeth shaved?

#1 Post by balniusc »

Hello all.
I think I'm in the home stretch as I should be getting settling elastics at my next appt. During the course of my treatment, my orthodontist has extruded my front top 4 teeth quite a bit. The 2 front teeth in particular are quite uneven and make an inverted V shape. My ortho has said this is due to uneven wear and he will even them out (via shaving) at the end of treatment. I've read from several posters, who have done exactly that, that their teeth have intruded despite wearing their retainer and were now stuck with uneven and short front teeth.

My question is - how long should I wait before I let my ortho shave my teeth? I would like my teeth to find their natural resting place before I do something so permanent.

sahve teeth NOT until x-ray shows roots are correctly inclin

Regarding inverted "V" shape of teeth: If I have correctly interpreted what you are describing you should ask your ortho to take a "final" paonoramic because it is entirely possible that the cause of the inverted V IS THAT THE ROOTS OF THE TWO FRONT TEETH HAVE BEEN INADVERTENTLY BEEN MADE TO LEAN OUTWARDLY TOO MUCH. Such a position of the roots would creat the inverted V look. If this is the case you would see it on the X-ray (panoramic). Consequently, rather than sand the edges of the teeth it would be more correct to rebond the brackets and allow the arch wires to correct the "axial inclination" of the roots of the two front teeth. Cordially,

I know this is an old post but I feel this is exactly what I am going through right now. I have the dreaded inverted V shape between my two upper centrals because I notice that my centrals are sitting at a \ / angle and are inclined (meaning the edges tip towards the back. It's good to know that something like that can be corrected with repositioning of the brackets. Definitely, this is something I will discuss on my next adjustment.

That's interesting that the inverted V can be caused by root position. I didn't think of that. Unfortunately my conspicuous inverted V is definitely from wear due to clenching/grinding on pushed in front teeth. I just had another panoramic xray today and my roots are all lovely and parallel. They've shaved the outer edges of my front teeth several times, now, but they won't be able to shave them straight since the angle is just too severe. Bonding it is :(

•Essix retainers top and bottom 16 hr/day for a year and then nightly afterwards.

Would shaving down an abnormality on one side of a tooth be completely different? Im asking because im pretty sure my regular dentist want to shave down a weird looking part of a tooth

Idk what to technically call it, but its the back surface of maybe 3 or 4 of my pointy "fang" type teeth, and i would describe it as like a ridge or groove that on one or two comes to an extra point, and i don't much see the point, plus it hasn't bothered me

All i know is my dentist mentioned this one tooth where it looks more obvious, repeatedly and had me scheduled for a filling but didn't mention me having any cavities, so im kinda thinking she wants to shave this one tooth down and i wonder if this could throw things off in a "fit" kind of way

I just got braces about a month ago, and im far from concered about shaving any teeth down right now, especially since my bite is still so open

Is there much of a point? Should i be concerned or should i just wait?

This picture shows how the one tooth has that extra point (which is the top of a groove or ridge type abnormality)
Lots of crimes here

1. The upper molars bite too far ahead of the lower molars

2. Missing teeth #s 9, 14, and, 29

3. Open bite

4. Upper midline left of center

5. Lower midline right of center

6. Upper and lower teeth not straight

Sentence - 24 months, turned to 27 month.

Braces removed since 11/06/17
