Having braces removed temporarily

#1 Post by sjs8906 »

I am scheduled to be braced in a couple of months (don't have an exact date yet). I am planning an October 2011 wedding and cannot bear the thought of having metal braces on my wedding day .

I know there have been brides that have their braces temporarily removed for a day or two for the ceremony. I'm so embarrassed to ask my orthodontist! I'm afraid that he will think I'm silly or shallow. However, I suppose the worst he could say is no.

My question(s) is/are has anyone done this? If so, was your orthodontist completely okay with it? I know it would be different everywhere but how much were you charged to have them taken off and put back on? Has anyone asked and the orthodontist said no?

If the cost is too much or my ortho won't do it, I suppose I could switch to ceramic...I'm currently scheduled for all metal.

I would either wait to have my braces put on until after the wedding or I would do ceramics that wouldn't be so obvious. I wouldn't have my braces removed temporarily.

One of my friends got married this past October, 10/10/10. She had her braces removed for the wedding (except the molar brackets). Instead of a few days she opted to have it off for one month to allow her to be brace face free for her honeymoon as well. Her orthodontist will be understanding... may charge you slightly more. Also, your treatment likely will be delayed. Hopefully your orthodontist will be understanding about it because even with ceramics, you still see it. Best of luck on your decision.

Even if it's doable, you may not want to go through it again after you experience the bonding procedure the first time. I got my upper brackets on earlier this month, and though I'm actually looking forward to having my lower ones toward the end of next month, I'm not looking forward to having them put on!

When I had braces as a teen, it wasn't so bad. My ortho back then basically stuffed a lot of cotton rolls in my mouth to keep everything dry, and that seemed to work out. My ortho now uses some contraption that spreads your cheeks and holds your tongue in place while (theoretically anyway) sucking the excess saliva out to keep you from choking on it. Notice I said in theory, because it didn't work out quite that way. I had to keep swallowing, as best I could in that weird position, and suppressing my gag reflex as best I could.

If it were me, I'd go with ceramic brackets (probably WAY cheaper than removal, reinstallation of metal ones) and start treatment ASAP. A lot of the basic alignment seems to happen early on in treatment, and you could have nice straight teeth for your wedding, even if they're still bracketed.

I have ceramic ones, and several friends have commented that you can't even see them from several feet away.

If you're worried about the photos, they can do a lot with Photoshop to remove them in key shots if you want.

I agree, go with ceramic or don't do it till after the wedding. It seems like a lot of work and money to put them on and off and on again.

I have ceramic braces and am getting married in April. I have thought a lot about this and have decided that I am probably going to keep my braces on for my wedding. In pictures, with ceramic braces, it is really hard to tell, if at all, that I have braces on. I may have my wire taken out for my wedding if I have the pringle (I think that's what it's called) wire on at that point, but that's about it Even if I have the wire taken out, my ortho only wants that to be for a couple of days. I'm already so happy with the progress that I've made so far, I don't want to risk my teeth out of braces for long.

Besides the fact that braces may be seen in pictures, I've come to the realization that when my friends and family (and my fiance and I) remember my wedding, they aren't going to remember the fact that I had braces, but what a great and happy occasion it was.

How about you get basic ceramics (ones which require ligs) and then just get the wire removed for the day of the wedding? I have regular ceramics on the top and SL ceramics on the bottom. You can def. see the metal clips on the SL when you compare the two. But I would think a completely ceramic bracket without a wire and fresh clear ligs would be almost invisible, or very very easy for the photographer to remove via photoshop. Could be the best of both worlds - straight teeth and no visible braces for the wedding pics!

Hi dear! I'm in the same boat: got braced last month for 1.5-2 years and getting marrried in september. I went for Radiance braces (clear ones) and I'm really happy I got them instead of ceramics! You can barely see the brackets at all (except if I grin and you look closely), especially in low light (I will have a night wedding so this is important for me). The only thing you can see is the wire, but I will probably go with a teflon coated one for the wedding. It will still be noticeable if you look up close, but I really don't care because in pictures you can't see them at all (except really close shots). Here's a picture taken at about 20 cm from my face:

These days I took a few photos grinning and you can't see my braces in any of them :)
I say don't sweat it. You'll be a beautiful bride with or without braces. Better to spend the extra money on your honeymoon than on getting the braces off and than on again...

Thanks so much everyone! I enjoyed reading everyone's opinions! I went in for an appointment today and have decided to go with ceramics and not try to have them taken off for the wedding. I'm happy with the decision so far--getting braced in 7 weeks, hopefully I'll feel the same then :D

Good luck and congrats on your upcoming weddings smilelikeyoumeanit and Epurica! Epurica your brackets look great, and practically invisible!

Just have the upper social 6 or 8 brackets and wire taken out, that would be fairly simple and would give you a brace free smile(unless you show a lot of bottom teeth when you smile).
