Root canal and braces

#1 Post by preciouskiss825 »

Hello everyone,
I am a little concerned about one of my teeth. I actually had a root canal done on my # 7 and 8 teeth, And I recently got braced. I have noticed that my # 8 tooth seems a lot more loose than the others. I have not noticed any thing with the #7 tooth. My Ortho is concerned that the tooth may have gone bad. Has anyone had a similar situation, and if so what did your Ortho do?

How could the tooth have gone bad if the root was removed during the root canal?

A root canal can "fail". In other words, an infection may persist.

You'll need an x-ray of that area to compare the pre-root canal, healthy tooth, and currently situation to figure out what is happening. This will likely be done with your general dentist or endodontist.

Thanks DrJason,

My Ortho said he would do an x-Ray at my next appointment. I'm just a little anxious, and I just want to know what would happen in a worse case senerio.

They do not remove your root during a root canal -- if they did the tooth would fall out.
They are removing the cause of infection by removing the tissue within the canal in the middle of the root, disinfect it, shape it, and fill it.

For many reasons root canals can reinfect. Quite often it is because the pt did not get the crown on top og the tooth )or filling on a front tooth) to seal the opening from the top of the root canal system. There are many other reasons as well.

I have been fortunate. I had two root canals done last year and was nervous that the endodontist was going to miss a canal and still have pulp within it to possibly reinfect. So far so good knock on wood. Was I ever grateful to have those root canals as I almost jumped out of his chair when he started testing those teeth with a cold stimulus.

Thanks for all of the replies. I just have a little update. At my last appointment my Ortho took out my wire to give that tooth a break and see if it would tighten up, and it did. The tenderness was also gone after two or three days. I just had an x-Ray and my dentist said everything looks good.

Happy New Year!!!
