wax/silicon wax question

#1 Post by GRILLZ »

ok this is probably stupid.....when you use wax or the silicon wax....are use supposed to only use it once and throw it out, or can you reuse it......also can you sleep with it in or does that prove to be somekind of choking hazard. braces tomorrow!!

I use the silicone stuff because regular wax didn't really work for me. Anyway, they say that you can use silicone, take it out, and use it again, but I've found that once the braces make their impressions on the silicone, it's hard to make it smooth again. I use it all the time and take it out to eat, but I drink with it in. I also wear it at night and sleep with it and nothing bad ever happens because it sticks on well. Of course, I usually take a piece and stretch it over several teeth because the braces cut up my cheeks and lips. I don't know if you'd choke or anything if it was only on one tooth or something. Anyway, it always peels off in one nice piece, unlike wax and you don't get itty bitty pieces of it in your mouth, so I just think the silicone is so much better than wax. I've used OrthoSil and BraceGard, but I like BraceGard better. Hope this helps. Definitely not stupid questions. :D

I haven't used the silicon wax yet.. but will ask my ortho on my next visit. I use the regular wax and I pretty much re-use it through the day. I put new wax on at night. I don't use very much anymore and I don't think swallowing is a hazard. I slept with it every night except for last night with no issues. I just have to remember to take it off to brush my teeth or else you get chunks of wax while brushing...

Although, if you don't want to re-use the wax - you should be able to get as much wax as you need from your ortho. I ended up picking up some extra during the week - I was paranoid I'd run out. But, now I'm well stocked for awhile. :)

I sleep with wax on all of the time. I've also swallowed it a couple of times (accidentally, of course). I'm perfectly fine. I don't think it's too much of a choking hazard.

My ortho gave me silicon wax, but I've only been able to find regular wax in the drug store. I actually prefer the regular wax, the silicon wax seemed a little too slippery.

I have been using the Cherry scented wax from dentakit for the last 10 months and i love it. But after all the talk about the orthosil, i just ordered some. The thing i don't like about regular wax is getting it off the brackets. Sometimes an hour later i'm still picking tiny bits of it out of my teeth. Now i'm wondering how the heck do i dry the bracket all the way? Paper towels?

This may sound odd, but I would suck air through my teeth to dry them a little when I needed to put wax on. It worked for me. I did try using paper towels and small dishcloths before. If it works for you, then cool! But for me it got paper fuzzy stuck on my bracket and then the dishcloth threads got caught once. I say use whatever works best for you :P

To use OrthoSil or BraceGard, I never actually try to dry my brackets. I just stick it on the brackets and press and mold it around them which kind of makes my mouth dry. Then, I smooth it with a wet finger and it stays in until I take it out. Sometimes I forget it's in my mouth though and I've started eating with it in. I always realize my mistake and pull it out. I've never swallowed any.
