Unhappy with just one tooth.. Advice?

#1 Post by mikek »

Hi, new here. (if this is in the wrong section I apologize)

I'm 21 years old, and had a good 3 years of braces back in Junior High/High School. Everyone was happy, my bite is now fine, end of story.
Well, not exactly. One of my lateral incisors (I think?) has always bothered me since then. I'll attach a pic at the end of this paragraph, but basically, it still sits a tad higher than all the rest. I've lived with it until now, but since I'm ready to graduate college/look for jobs/interview/meet lots of new people/etc, I think it's time to do something about it so I'll look and feel my best for all those important events.

So, at my last dental appt. I casually brought up the idea of using bonding to lengthen the tooth, but the dentist literally laughed and said it was supposed to be like that, and the bonding would just fall right off. I've been trying to do some research online, but there really isn't much info on cases involving just one tooth, especially extrusion (which I understand is a much more difficult problem than side-side movements).

Does anyone have any advice on what my options are to possibly fix this one simple problem? I'm really hoping I don't need a mouth full of braces again just for one tooth, if that's the case I'll probably just leave it alone. I've seen some cases online where dentists said they could do some bonding work to lengthen teeth, so maybe I just need to ask a different dentist (or a strictly cosmetic dentist)? I've also considered something like a porcelain veneer, but there isn't anything wrong with the tooth itself, doesn't totally covering it up seem silly? I've also considered going back to my old orthodontist to ask about some sort of express invisalign treatment, but I understand extrusions are pretty tough to pull of with invisalign.

Anyone have some advice or other options I'm not aware of? I really wish they would have just made everything even back when I had braces, but my bite is fine, so thy probably didn't think it was a big deal (it is to me!).

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I'd have said bonding too, I have no idea why your dentist would have found this funny. It's the obvious solution isn't it? I'd get a second opinion, good luck

After looking at some more successful bonding jobs around the net, I definitely think that's the right option. I'll look for a more cosmetic-oriented dentist.

If you wanted something more permanent you could do a vaneer on just that tooth.
But I do agree, you need a better dentist. One who does cosmetic fixes without laughing at you.

Its quite common for the lateral incisors to be like that, mine are like that. I think the angle of the pic and the slew of your lip is exaggerating the extent of it.

If they were both like that I wouldn't care. I just want them to be even.
I'd much rather add bonding to this tooth than file down the other one.

Hi Mikek,

Judging from the one photo it appears the tooth next to the one you're talking about may be a bit longer than the one on it's other side. I wonder if a dentist could shave/shape the bottom of that tooth down a bit to give the illusion of the shorter tooth being longer?

I'm not a dentist I just play one on TV.

No matter what you have cute teeth <grin.>

regards, Jude

Wow I can't believe your dentist laughed at you when you brought it up. That's so rude!

I would try searching for cosmetic dentists in your area and opt for a veneer if you are really worried about it :)
