Why aren't brackets round?

#1 Post by threescompany »

I mean seriously? Whose idea was it to put sharp squares against the soft inside of the mouth? Clearly the inventor of braces never had to wear them.

When I grow up I wanna be a mechanical engineer and invent round orthodontic brackets.

That would make so much sense! Round with a groove to hold a lig or round damon brackets...

My experience so far has taught me that little consideration is given to patients in this process.
Metal braces from March 2011 until October 2012. Hawley retainers since October 2012.

I know! I can even picture the bracket in my mind. The process of moving teeth of course isn't going to be always comfortable, you'd think they'd try to make the appliances themselves mouth friendly.

Haha -- have you guys heard of Wild Smiles brackets? I know very little about them, but apparently they come in all different shapes like hearts, stars, footballs, etc. Don't know if I'm allowed to link, so just google it. I have no idea if they work, have other issues, etc., but they look cool! I assume the part that sticks out would cause similar rubbing issues, though.
I definitely hear you on that -- I have no wire on the bottom at the moment, and the brackets are rubbing the heck out of my inner lip!
