Braces - fix lisp

#1 Post by fangsbegone »

Hey Everyone,

Just a quick question - I currently have a very mild lisp, i'm being braced in 3 weeks and wonder will the closure of gaps (and improved alignment) help fix the lisp. My ortho is under the impression that it might not but there is a chance,

Has anyone any first hand experience with a lisp before/after braces ? Does it get better - my lisp doesn't bother me and people say they don't really notice it unless I point it out, ortho recommends speech therapy but I would say that would be a bit expensive and excessive

I had a very mild lisp before braces and 2 years, 3 months into treatment I still have a very mild lisp. I had jaw surgery too. If it doesn't bother you - who cares?! :D

When I first got braces, I had a slight lisp. From what I have read, this is normal. Your mouth needs to adjust to all the stuff in it. It lasted only a few weeks and sometimes comes back to visit for a short while after adjustments.

I wouldn't be discouraged if your lisp gets worse when the braces go on.

I completely agree  but when I mentioned it to my ortho she almost gasped and said "you'll have to see a speech therapist about that" - fingers crossed when those power chains are put on and gaps closed I'll have no worries
