LMAO! At first I was like, this guy doesn't know how to type...then the more i read, i started to laugh. I think you just have to treat it like braces. You didn't get used to them over night, and the retainer is going to be the same issue. At least it's good for a laugh, right?
My husband thought the beginning braces lisp was super funny. There's a cartoon called the Oblongs and one of the girls on it has a crazy funny lisp...so he made fun of me and that cartoon....the spitting while i talked seemed to entertain him as well.
Good luck.

That's what i've been thinking since watching http://www.myretainer.com/SeeHow.html
I just keep wondering why they can't make it thinner? I mean I remember my dad had those coke bottle glasses when I was younger, then all of a sudden they were able to make them crazy thin. Maybe some one needs to get on this?

Quick question (I'll stop with the lisp silliness now lol).

I'm going out with the girlfriend's family for a few hours tomorrow. If I leave the retainer out just for the that amount of time, there won't start being any relapse right? Again i've had it for only about 5 days now. Yeah I understand that I'm probably being OCD with this question, but ya never know. Thanks...

Great question and I hope somebody answers b/c I am wondering about this too. I'll have to be in full time retainers for some time (not sure how many months) and I know there are going to be special events/dinners where I will NOT want to be wearing the retainer. I wonder if it'll do any long time harm to not wear them for a few hours at a time? I heard that the retainers will fix minor issues in your mouth so I would THINK that not wearing it for a few hours would be okay b/c it would just fix any relapse that would happen in such short time periods.

Well I am definitely leaving it out for a few hours. So I'll report back. I'm pretty certain that it'll be alright though...................I hope :?

I had a Hawley retainer after my first round of braces (had to have them on again for jaw surgery), it was terrible at first. I couldn't swallow in it for about a week. I went back to see my orthodontist about it after a couple of days and had to come into the surgery holding a kitchen roll to mop up the dribble.... (I couldn't close my lips and my lower jaw slanted down to one side, so without being able to swallow frequently there was just no way I could hold back my saliva without tipping my head back).

I'd say I was probably more miserable a few days after getting my hawley retainer than I was at the same point after jaw surgery. My orthodontist said I'd just have to try and persevere, and it did eventually get better. I never found it comfortable but it became much more bareable.

This is freaking hillarious! The very first day I got my retainer (11 days ago), I had to meet with a wedding planner! I doubt she understood a word I said.

So I'm back and happy to say that I have noticed any relapse in the four or so hours that I had it out. I will say that I cannot freaking wait to not have to wear it during the day. Felt amazing, my friends...

Gary....Are you serious?? You had a relapse within 4 hours??? +\+ I'm courious. I will be in retainers before the end of the summer and I'm sure that there will be occasions that I would not wear my retainer. But if it will cause a relapse, I would have to re-think the occasions.

Keep us posted.
