Hi all,
I am 4 months into wearing my braces. I have clear upper and lower 'train-track' ones in prep for surgery next year. Most annoying thing i find is that when i have my adjustments (6-9 weeks), after about a week, i will eat a curry, drink red wine, or have something that stains the elastic modules (which hold the wire onto the brackets) a neon green/ lime green colour!
I have been good so far and havent eaten the stuff i know that gives them this horrible green tint. but yesterday at a bbq, i found out that mustard does this now too! i have 7 weeks until my next appointment i really really want to know if anyone else has experienced this and if there is any way at all to get rid of the nasty colour????
I was thinking trying bi-carbonate soda to take the stain away??
Anyone have any ideas? I dont want to have to get them changed after only 2 weeks since my previous adjustment
I HATE it!

I know how you feel! It's so annoying getting lovely clean/clear ligatures and then like a week later they are a horrible yellow colour.
I'm 10 months in and now I just don't even care about the staining anymore. There's just so much good "staining" food out there I just don't want to live without. I find using a strong mouthwash over a couple of days helps the ligatures get a little bit back to their normal color, but unfortunately they will never be as clear as the day you get them changed
Mustard is the worst! Some curries, especially the ones with turmeric in them are very staining (but tasted so good!). Any food that has some kind of artificial yellow/green coloring in it it is bad, like those 2 minute chicken noodles or bottle Peri Peri sauce.
I've never tried the bi card soda. Let us know how it goes if you decide to try it!
Lately my ligatures are getting changed every 2 months. It sucks. I bet when my ortho takes my ligs off he is disgusted by the color of them lol

Lynette is right--you may be able to get the stain to fade a bit but nothing apart from changing them out will get them back to pristine. If you are unwilling to adjust your diet, you can try other discrete colors of ligs such as pearl, smoke or light gray. Sometimes those resist staining a bit better although no ligs apart from the very dark colors are going to resist turmeric or mustard stains.
