Can I switch from metal braces to Invisalign?

#1 Post by Newguy2 »

Hello everyone

I have been in braces for about 15 months and I think I have another year to go. Is it possible to switch to Invisalign during my braces treatment? I would like to do this for personal reasons. My orthodontist does Invisalign as well so I won't be switching orthodontists. Would I have to pay all over again to get Invisalign? I'm not willing to pay full price for the treatment because I'm using the same ortho, but I am willing to pay maybe, at the most, half the price.

My orthodontist is a super nice guy and he always says how perfect a patient I am because I always do what he tells me. I am kind of nervous about asking him about switching to Invisalign because I don't know if this is a common thing people do. He asked me if I wanted Invisalign at the before my treatment because it would be around the same price, but I decided on the damon braces.

If anyone can give me some information on this kind of thing I would really appreciate it.

I know that Invisalign is a different kettle of fish, since your ortho has less control over it and the trays have to be manufactured on their factory. But you certainly can ask. I would not be afraid to ask since you are a patient and you pay a lot for it, so you have a right to at least ask questions. It is OK to change your mind. Another reason to ask is that your ortho may not think it is a good idea to switch to invisalign now since you are in the middle of another treatment.
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

I have no formal dental or orthodontic education. Hence, all opinions expressed by me on this forum are those of an "informed consumer" and by no means intended as an expert advice.

Thanks for the reply.

I will ask my orthodontist at my next appointment and see what he thinks. I am still a little nervous about asking him because I'm afraid it might be a hassle for him to switch me to Invisalign.

Im sure he could do it but I don't think it is realistic to expect it for half price. You are over half way through treatment and would have to start all over again on invisalign, extending your treatment and forcing your otho to outlay a huge amount of money to purchase the specially made invisalign trays.
