Wow - if he can do it without extractions, that would be fantastic!! I started out with a 6mm overjet, and the two orthodontists I spoke with said I would need at least one extraction (one guy said just one, and the other one said two, or possibly THREE!) A year later, I see how much they've progressed, and cannot imagine how they could've done this without removing that one tooth (yes, I went with the "one tooth" guy. haha)

I guess if worse comes to worse, and it doesn't work without extractions, he could do them later. However, you should know about that possibility ahead of time, in case you have strong feelings against having your teeth pulled.

I'm curious to see if there are others here who had it done. If there are any... I'm jealous of all of you!!!

My ortho said a normal overjet is 2 to 4mm so perhaps he is aiming to get you to 4mm with IPR or by moving molars back? I see no harm in asking him how he plans on doing it...it is your body and your money, after all!

Really? 2-4mm? Shoot - mine's there right now!! Honestly, if he told me there was nothing else he could do, other than close up my now-teeny extraction gap, but had to keep my overjet as-is, I'd be happy with that. At least my teeth are in the middle of my mouth now.

Yes, steveogt4 - go ahead and ask your ortho!

I had a 5mm overjet and consulted with 2 orthos for treatment. One wanted to extract teeth and only gave me 1 option for treatment. The ortho I ended up with gave me 3 options for treatment with and without extractions. I of course chose the option the had no extractions, and cost the most. I had to have 4 TAD's installed, and was told my treatment would be 2.5 to 3 years. I am coming up on the 1 year mark and am almost finished. I am down to about 1mm overjet atm and second to last wire on bottom and will have the second to last wire installed next appointment. I should be out of braces by Christmas. My treatment has cost over $9k, the TAD's were $2.8k, braces $6.4k so not cheap at all. But it's all worth it because my teeth look fabulous and the treatment was really fast.

I don't know what my overjet is, I will ask when I get braced this Friday. But my dentist and orthodontist both have commented on what a small palette I have, so I believe it when they said I had to have 4 teeth removed to make room for the others. I'm sure it's my small mouth that caused all the crowding and overjetting in the first place.

My ortho said, for me, it was either extractions or surgery. It was a no-brainer for me. S I think it would depend on how much room there is in your mouth.
In full braces for 2 years, 3 weeks, 1 day.

I started with a 9mm overjet. My orthodontist said I would probably need 2 more premolars extracted in addition to the ones that already went for the first time round with braces. I wasn't happy with that so we agreed to try TADs. I'm having my wisdom teeth extracted instead so all my top teeth can be moved back. I'm much happier with that as I don't really see them as useful teeth and they tend to nip my cheeks fairly often so I won't miss them!

Be happy that you can go a non-extraction route.
BTW, you can always have the teeth extracted in the middle of treatment if this is needed.

Good luck!
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

My understanding is that everyone's teeth move as they age. Whether or not you have extractions has no bearing on this fact. It happens to those who never had braces as well. The lucky thing for you, though, is that if you wear your retainer for the recommended time and then a couple nights a week for the rest of your life, you should be just fine:)

I started with a 7mm overjet and had my regular 6mo. dental check-up yesterday. It is now at 5mm after 3 months which I am very happy about.

I do not have to have any extractions. Apparently, for some reason Damon braces are supposed to cut down on the need for extractions. But, from day one I have had elastics, and will be moving on to the Forsus to help pull the overjet in.
Even though I am dreading the Forsus, I think I would much rather have that than extractions.....
