Getting braces off for my daughter's wedding
Hi all, I'm a year in, and my daughter's wedding is this weekend. My braces are coming off tomorrow, temporarily....they'll be going back on in about a week and a half.
Anyone else have this experience? How is having them put back on? I'm hoping it's not as painful as the first time!
It's possible that just the top will be coming off....which will be only half the pain!
If anyone else has done this, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

Re: Getting braces off for my daughter's wedding
Are you saying that you're having all of your braces entirely removed just for this wedding? Are you concerned about the appearance of your teeth for photos and stuff? Is it really worth the trouble of removal and reinstallation? Doesn't seem like it would be for me! But I would like the chance to feel my teeth without braces, and I'm only a month and a half in.
Re: Getting braces off for my daughter's wedding
Probably not entirely removed...most likely only the top. It's for the photos, but also for the ability to eat easily in public and to talk all night without having my mouth ripped up. I'll let you know how easy the removal was in a couple of hours!Robot Teeth wrote:Are you saying that you're having all of your braces entirely removed just for this wedding? Yes, as mother of the bride, it's worth it to me. Early on, I wouldn't have thought so, but now it seems to make sense.

Re: Getting braces off for my daughter's wedding
I've had my braces on for 1 year. They are coming off on 9-23 for good!
I don't have an answer to your question, about having them taken off and then put back on, having not had that experience. After all the pain I've been through with torn up mouth etc, I'm not sure I could even mentally go through with having them off and then knowing they would be back on in 1.5 weeks. That for me would be a huge tease of freedom when it wasn't really earned.
I'm 60, my daughter is 21. If she were getting married, my braces would stay on. Photos would be a reminder of that period of my life combined with her happy day.

Hello armadillo! I can appreciate your reasoning! My son is getting married (fancy, formal wedding)in two weeks and I am three months into braces (ceramic top/metal lowers), and these braces are on for the long haul. I am also doing a reading at the church and if the wording of the old testament text I have to read doesn't crack me up laughing, the way I seem to speak with these braces probably will! I am not worried about the pictures...I don't expect to be displayed on anyone's wall and it will certainly be a memorable event. The eating in public part is something I am not looking forward to!

I have to say that both of you are 2 strong women for getting braces on at your age!
Rusty's Mom- Good luck with the reading! I am constantly stumbling over words- it's really bad on phone conference calls, with people I can't see! As for eating, drink a lot of water and swish it around in your mouth before talking.

So it wasn't that big a deal...he took off my top wire, and removed 8 brackets...6 white ones, and 2 metal ones. What was amazing was how straight my teeth are after a year in braces!!! I can actually smile in the wedding photos without a big lump in my upper lip. It's heavenly! What a great preview to actually getting them ALL off within the next year! Straight by 60 is my motto.Rusty'sMom wrote:Hello armadillo! I can appreciate your reasoning! My lower braces are still intact and are not being removed.
I go back in a week and a half to have the 8 brackets replaced and a new wire. It's really not that big a deal.
Rusty'sMom, good luck with the reading and enjoy the wedding! Now, off into hurricane Irene for the wedding weekend. Thanks everyone!

I got married in my braces. I figured anything was better than how my teeth used to look. I honestly don't mind the pictures. Love was more important to me.

Armadillo-
That's great about the preview of seeing how much your teeth have improved in the past year!
It must be a joy to be able to smile without having a bumper guard inside your mouth!
I hope the wedding is a LOT of fun and Irene doen't put a damper on it.

Re: Getting braces off for my daughter's wedding
Thanks! The wedding was fantastic, although the storm prevented a lot of people from coming, which was too bad. We were VERY lucky to be able to pull it off on Saturday night....other weddings at our venue in Falmouth were moved and still others on the Cape were canceled.sea54change wrote:Armadillo-

In any case, I was extremely happy to have my top braces off (smooth teeth!!!) but will also be glad to get them back on and finish the job. There have been days I've wanted to rip them off, so now that I have a preview of it being worth it, I'm ok with the remaining time. I was a bit surprised at how stable my teeth felt (I was worried they'd feel loose) but also surprised that biting down on things (corn!) was painful. Back to the ortho on Tuesday morning....will see how sore my teeth/mouth are on Wednesday!

Armadillo-
I'm so glad to hear that you were able to have the wedding on Saturday. It's too bad a lot of the guests couldn't attend. Still, your daughter and new son in law will have lots of good memories inspite of Irene.
I didn't realize you line in MA. Falmouth is a great venue for a wedding. I hope nobody had plans to catch the ferry next day to MV.
We drove our daughter back to college in the rain on Saturday night.
I'm VERY interested to hear how the re-bracketing and banding goes for you. Will you suffer through the same pain or has your mouth toughened up enough so it's as if they were never off?
Braced: Lowers 9-1-10; Uppers 12-1-10

Small world isn't it....despite of all of this internet business I am also located in MA, Southcoast area and I will be attending my son's wedding on this Friday the 9th...wish us luck with the weather, and of course my reading at the ceremony! Glad to hear the great news about your daughter's wedding. I am also anxious to hear about the rebanding....

Re: Getting braces off for my daughter's wedding
How funny that we're all in Mass!
Well, got my brackets and a new heavier wire put on earlier this week. Everyone at the ortho's office wanted to see photos but I didn't have any!
The re-bracketing was more uncomfortable than I remember the first time being....the mouth spreader that holds your mouth open was choking me, but all in all, it wasn't too bad. Took pre-emptive Advil and I think that was a good idea. I was ok at first but all of my upper teeth hurt, much like the first time, and some of my teeth were very sensitive at the gum line, just like before. But the good news is I can eat. Tonight I had steak for dinner (cut really small) and corn cut off the cob. Teeth feel better today - not throbbing-- but are sensitive if I bite down hard.
Anyway, I think it was worth it! Rusty's mom, enjoy every minute of the wedding....it flies by! And Sea54change, Good luck to your daughter at school. Been there with both of my kids. Nope, no ferry plans, but my nephew's flight back to SF was cancelled, and others left the Cape early on Sunday to avoid a potential bridge closing. Oh well, it WAS definitely memorable! Thanks for taking an interest in my story!
