Weird Taste in Mouth
Hey, So has anyone else had a weird taste in their mouth after they got braces? I have the porcelain braces and I was thinking maybe that's what the weird taste is? I don't know what else it could be? Any ideas?

Does it taste like you are sucking on dimes?
Re: Weird Taste in Mouth
I haven't had any weird tastes but I definitely have a much drier mouth. It is really annoying I drink plenty of fluids now, maybe you can try that, maybe it'll keep your mouth cleaned out from the bad taste.

Flynn- buy some Breathsavers, they really help with the wet/dry mouth issues in the beginning. I have been hooked on them since the first week!flynn wrote:I haven't had any weird tastes but I definitely have a much drier mouth. I'm not sure, never sucked on a dime. I guess I'm not really sure what it tastes like, seems to come around when I haven't eaten lately. What's the dime taste from if it were that?Snowglobe32 wrote:Does it taste like you are sucking on dimes?

Snowglobe-
Thanks, I will definitely give that a try and I hope this goes away when the biteplate comes out!

For the first few weeks it tasted like I had just came from the dentist, every day!
It will go away once you've had them for a while.

LOL- I have never actually sucked on dimes, I should have said, "do you have a metal like taste in your mouth?"
I don't know what it means but I know it felt like that when I first got braced. I am sure it has something to do with the wires and metal.

Hopefully your stange taste has now disappeared. I know that I had a really strong chemical tast for many many days after having a huge chunk of bonding applied. It eventually went away, hopefully your taste goes away too..

oh! I wonder if it was the bonding. It was kind of a chemical taste. I think it's started to go away, I haven't woke up with the taste in my mouth for the last few days. Thanks, I hadn't even thought of the bonding from the molar buildups.

Re: Weird Taste in Mouth
If a molar band gets loose, crud can get up underneath and cause a weird taste. Try brushing/flossing extra around any bands and see if that makes a difference, since a loose band should be taken care of sooner than later.
On the other hand, I have heard people mentioning a "metallic" taste which I thought was puzzling. Then a couple of months ago, I got a wire change which was also a change in the alloy that the wires are made of. The next day I had a definite metal taste which got stronger over the next couple of days. All seemed clean, bands were ok, etc., but everything had sort of a brassy flavor for a couple of weeks before it went away on its own.
I think that with certain wire/bracket combinations along with acids in the saliva creates a small electrolysis reaction, in other words you have made a tiny battery! Nothing to worry about, but the taste is a little strange. I suspect that after the new wires or whatever have been in place for a little while, they get some oxidation on them and the reaction slows down enough so the taste goes away. Perhaps the docs can validate this guess?

If it tastes like rubber it could be from the bands if you have the regular sort of braces.
