Who got ligature wires instead of Rubbers?

#1 Post by zcenteno »

i got ligature wires as ligature instead of rubber ones. My ortho told me it that ligature wires are more efficient than rubber ligs. Rubber ligatures looses it elasticity over time, once it does, the movement stops. Whereas for ligature wires it remains constant. the only thing about ligature wires are it takes time for the dentist to tie it in compared to the rubber where you just snap it on. So basically it means lig wires are a bit of hassle to orthodontists because of the amount of time they put it on.but my ortho doesnt mind. In fact, he said almost all of his ortho cases, he is using lig wires on them. Some of them actually got their braces off earlier than expected. what do you guys think? anyone here got lig wires besides me? =)

and personally i like em. i looks more "professional" for me, im in my 20's, male. so those colorful ligatures are way out of my taste. hehe. just my two cents.

what do you guys think?

My office used rubber O rings exclusively unless there was a clinical reason to literally wire tie the tooth to the wire. But I learned about wire ties from reading this board so I knew to ask for them. Loved 'em. I had ceramic uppers on my front 6 and wire ties were the best--and I agree--they did somehow look more "professional" especially on clear brackets. Plus no staining! Although my ortho defaulted to ligs, she didn't care if I got wire ties instead. However the assistants (who were doing all the work) clearly did care. Some did ties no questions asked but others tried to give me excuses as to why I couldn't get them even though the ortho was just at my chair saying it was OK. They do take extra time and effort and clearly some of the assistants didn't want to deal with it.

For the last six months or so I've had wire ties and then O's over the top. Painful. I agree the wire ties do seem cleaner, and even makes the metal brackets less noticeable, but I still like my colors.

Steel ties are great for fully engaging teeth during the initial stages of alignment with NiTi wires. Later, they are used to anchor and hold the teeth in place to prevent undesired movements while in stainless steel wires. We do also use them on anterior teeth with ceramics. In the aforementioned situations, they may be better than elastic ties, but using them on all teeth is definitely not required.

I have wire laced to my back 3 molars both sides to keep them in place, and then I have a rubber chain across the front to pull the front together. All this makes food get trapped so easily and cleaning very difficult.

I had wire ties for a few montbs with regular ligs over those, and springs here and there to push teeth apart. Cant say that is an enjoyabe experience and each time he got them out im like " oh wonderful here we go again" more pain and you really really feel them going on and getting twisted over the bracket, but hey they got my teeth moving which was great.

now ive been stuck with these stupid powerchains at each visit they even started almost right at the start.

Sorry for ranting everyone, feel better now having had a winge.

go to 0:43, elastics are half dead in 24 hrs!

so is your tooth movement, half dead within 24 hrs. haha makes sense doesn't it?

If you get grey ligs, you don't really need to worry about staining... I imagine tie-wires will be ideal in some situations, but an iron grip on the archwire shouldn't be necessary as a universal.

I'm getting braced on Friday and I'm going with old-fashioned grey. I agree that colors are out-of-place in many professional situations.

true that, grey is much more conservative than other ligature colors.

im planning to have tie wires next adjustment. i think nickel-titanium wires has low coefficient friction on tie wires thus promoting more constant and hypothetically speedy movement. Compared to rubber to niti-wire, it has high coefficient friction thus slow and them rubber ligs according to some research are half dead after 24 hrs of being attached.

hehe im not really a fan of colored ligs am i? haha :-*

I know this is an old thread, but it was the only one I could find on this!

I've had lingual braces for 3 weeks, went in for a repair yesterday, and my ortho just added some "quick links" on my upper front teeth - wire ligatures.

I'm not sure if they're over or instead of the elastics, but they definitely seem to have got my teeth moving. Ouch!
