Life sucks

#1 Post by nikk87 »

I know this site is supposed to be for adults, but I wanted to talk to people who have more experience with braces. I'm 15, and just got braces about a month and a have ago. They're just like classic metal ones, and i had the top on for a month, then got bottoms and these HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE things..called turbos i think? Anyways its like a mini tooth glued behind my front teeth so i can't fully bite down :( i have FOUR of them...a lisp, inability to chew, and lots of pain. Not mention some buildup thing glued onto my molars :( sorry if I sound whiny, but i literally feel like crying. it hurts and is super annoying...i basically begged my parents to let me stop treatment, but they said no. my life SUCKS. does anyone know how long the stupid turbo thing lasts for i can't stand not chewing...and, in about 2 weeks we go on vacation to dominican :( no yummy holiday food for me. gaaah.all this is enough to make me want to rip them out of my mouth, or curl up and sleep forever.

Hi nikk, your parents are doing the right thing and you will thank them for it one day.

I was given the opportunity to have braces when i was 14 and turned them down at least 3 times.
I never was truly happy and confident because I was too scared what other people at school might think.

I'm now 26, wishing my parents wouldn't let me back out of it so easy. I have to pay £2,600 and wait 2 whole years for it to be done.

Trust me, when you're 18 with amazing teeth you probably won't know half the people at school with you and everyone new you meet will love your smile.

My only advice is, when you get a retainer, USE IT, so many people on this site are in braces for the 2nd time because they didn't bother with the retainer.
Brace Date: 14th April 2011
Estimated Debrace Date: 14th April 2013
Real Debrace Date 18th June 2013

4 extractions, upper ceramic brackets and lower metal to fix overjet and overcrowding.

Hi nikk87. Sorry to hear you're suffering so, but if it's any consolation, you'll be glad you did it by the end of it. I cannot tell you how much I wish I had had braces at your age instead of now at 23, having to pay £2,795, on top of other costs like extractions, x-rays, and check-ups.

kennyandrew85 has written a wonderful post, and I could not have put it better myself. Bare with it; things will get better! It will all be worth it in the end :)
My Story — Braced on 2 March 2012. 4 premolar extractions. Ceramic/clear uppers, metal lowers. Duration of 2 years.
Currently: Third adjustment 19 June (all teeth bracketed!)

Wow molar buildups AND turbos - That does suck. I had molar buildups for about 4 months, and I hated it. But I eventually did get used to them. Don't worry, you'll be ok, and the time will pass quicker than you think.

I have turbos too--can't bite down, and it's really, really difficult. I know it feels really depressing--especially at first. I don't think others really understand how life-altering it is to have all that junk in your mouth! Someone said on this site once that you have to choose the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Either way there's a price to pay! That really helped me to stick it out. It does get better. You're not alone!

Hey Nikk--we are all here with you--you do have yourself a mouthful, and even the bravest adult would have a difficult time with what your dealing with. Do you have friends at school going through the same thing? With braces being the popular thing at your age, you may be able to find someone to confide in..??

It will get better--and even us older folks have to tell each other that!! Try to imagine being 55 with braces for the first time!! Are you laughing now? Good!! Cuz that's me!! Cheer up and try to have fun on your trip!! (Wish I was going!!)

Trust us--it sucks now, but it really isn't the end of the world--it will get better, and it will go by fast. And please remember to thank your parents when you are in your 20's with beautiful teeth!!!

Thank YOU Nikk87!
I'm 47 and just got my braces on yesterday, and having a super tough day today.

So thank you for starting this thread and to everyone who encouraged you (because it encouraged me!) and thank you for your encouraging comment to klobird - that made ME laugh!

I'm a super logical person, and I LOGICALLY know this is good in the long term and I'm doing it for medical reasons, but sometimes, you just need to hear the right combo of words to remind you that it IS the right thing to do!

So you go and enjoy your vacation!

(And I went to my 15 year old nephews for advice before I got my braces on!)

Hi Nikk87-
Even I would say "Life sucks" if I had all of that in my mouth! I can't imagine the pain and the discomfort of the build ups, the turbos AND the braces.

I was 59 when first braced. Now I'm 60 and have had my braces off for 2 weeks. My inspiration for getting braces was my 21 year old daughter and her PERFECT teeth, after 3.5 years in braces (13-17).

I can totally sympathize with the pain you are going through. I think Klobird had a great suggestion about finding a freind w/ braces to help you through this. All the people on this board helped me, as NOBODY I know has braces!
Bottom braces: 9-1-10
Top Braces: 12-1-10, enamel
Debrace date:Top 12-12-11
Bottom: 1-5-2012

Wow...just thank the lucky stars you got them now.
Think not getting braces in my teens is something i think about...ALOT! Lot of regret there I tells ya.

So now in my 20's with braces...To be perfectly honest having them now isn't an issue at all, but if I had the chance of now or before, I would've decided before.

Trust me when you pass your teens you'll be thanking your parents big time, because I think you'll appreciate it more when you're a little older. They don't call it the Hollywood smile for nothing 8)

Hi Nikk-87,

I am 33 years old and 3 months into braces. Believe me, it sucks even more if you do this later in life than when you are suppossed to (in your teens). Everyone I know either have a great smile or crooked teeth. Nobody have braces and I can´t find a confident word from my friends or coworkers (well, I do talk about braces with one of my friend's daughters, she is 13 or so and recently got braces as well).

I wish I had gone through this while younger. And spent my 20s with a great smile.

So, cheer up! Time goes fast and the result is what you should care about. You'll be fine after a few weeks into treatment. It only gets easier from now on. It is worth every penny and every second of it.
