Getting my first wire change on monday and have a question

#1 Post by jamsmak04 »

So my second adjustment is monday. My first one my ortho just put the same wires back in. This time he is forsure changing them and I am so not looking forward to it. How long were you in pain when you got your first new wire? I am going to cuba 2 weeks after my wire change and do not want to be in loads of pain or anything.

Two weeks should be more than enough time for the pain to go away.

I can't remember exactly how long it took to adjust to the first wire change but it was certainly less than two weeks. I have just had my second change on the bottoms, this time to a rectangular wire and the first 24 hrs were a bit tense but already it is settling down to bearable. You should be fine.

Where in Cuba are you headed? We just got back last Sunday from Cayo Coco. Had a great time! I noticed this time that at least one of the staff members and our tour rep. were wearing braces. Guess I notice it more now that I'm wearing them myself.

It's always the same for me--about 3-5 days. Then it's smooth sailing again until the next adjustment...Have a great trip!!!

My ortho actually changed my wire on my first adjustment and I didn't have any pain at all - the elastic pulling my front two teeth together is more bothersome than the wire.....

Well today I got my wire changed. So far I am feeling awesome!!! So no complaints. Some slight pressure. But I got stuck with the dreaded elastics. I have 2 elastics on each side to help my overjet. No pain from them really, a tiny bit of jaw pressure on the left side. My ortho said I can keep the elastics off while on vacation but I doubt I will. But at least the wire was changed so I can expect some more changes. Next adjustment is April 30th. Said we were gonna do some xrays and move some brackets around and work on the midline.

I am headed to santa maria and staying at the Iberostar Ensenachos on cayo ensenachos. The beaches are something else. I wish we had flights from edmontont to cayo coco but none are direct but cayo ensenachos has beaches just as nice.

Mine are 12 weeks apart because mine are self ligating and my ortho sees no point in seeing me every 6 weeks. He typically only changes the wires every 12-20 weeks so says there is no need. He is doing something right because my teeth are prefectly straight after using only one wire. Now this wire is to widen my arches. I guess all ortho's are different and each patient is a unique case.

You'll get used to it pretty fast.
The first wire is the most painful in my opinion, as the teeth are being brought to life to begin movement.

Enjoy the progress! When you get 9 months in things don't move so fast anymore, still good to see things move but the first 5-6 months are awesome.
Brace Date: 14th April 2011
Estimated Debrace Date: 14th April 2013
Real Debrace Date 18th June 2013

4 extractions, upper ceramic brackets and lower metal to fix overjet and overcrowding.

I think I was expecting the same pain I had when I first got them on. I could eat normal food and still can. Sure its a bit sensitive but at least I can still eat. And the elastics are not nearly as bad and I have heard. And this whole square wire thing isn't too bad either. And it is very nice to see the changes. I have a straight smile for the first time in my life and it feels so good.

It is different for everyone. I only felt a little pressure on my first wire change. No pain at all. Just got new wires again today and again just a little pressure but no real pain.
