Power chains and colors question

#1 Post by klobird »

I am getting my archwires taken out when I have my regular 6 month dental appointment in 2 weeks. Does anyone know if it is reasonable to ask for new powerchains then? I have no idea how much that stuff costs. I hate the smoky color I have now and I really want to try the sky blue. My braces are self ligating, so no colors there....only with the powerchains...

It is reasonable to ask to have new power chain placed if you are unhappy with the colour and it is being taken off anyways. However, is it your dentist who is doing your orthodontic treatment or an orthodontist? If your dentist isn't doing the treatment, he/she may not have new power chain to give you.

Oh ok---it's my ortho doing the treatment--but I go to the ortho first, get it all taken off, then go to the dentist, then go back to the ortho afterward to get it all put back on. It's an all day thing, but my dentist prefers it that way. My powerchain is under the archwire, so it would have to all be taken off anyway to change the color.

So new colors for me!!

Thanks Dr. Tam for your response!

FYI, yes, the powerchains are totally disposable and cheap. I don't think they cost any more than ligatures do, and those are no more than a few cents each.

I am never being asked what color powerchains I want :? They just put the silver in. Not that I mind (I like that it blends with braces and is invisible), but why not to ask???

I should ask for hot pink or neon green powerchains one day :-*
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

Shouldn't be a problem. I get new power chanis every time I go in. They change the bottom ligs and and the top power chain. I just got pink ligs on bottom and pink pc on top today.

I wasn't being asked about colors for rubberbands or chains before. I think they assumed as an adult I would always want gray/clear to blend in. But I finally asked for colors instead. I figure I might as well have a little fun with it! Right now I have pink powerchains and rubberbands- for Valentine's Day! :)
Just tell them what you would like. Those things are cheap and easy to change.
