Pain after teeth extraction

#1 Post by MaryCr »

Hello, this is my first post here. I am 26 years old and I am finally getting braces this coming week. Unfortunately, I had to have four teeth extractions in preparation for braces this past Monday and one of them still hurts. I already called the oral surgeon and I was told to keep taking the pain medication and to call back on Monday if I am still in pain.

I had my wisdom teeth extracted in the past and I don't remember being in pain for this long. Is it common to have pain after four days?

hm, i had my wisdom teeth out (all 4 at once) and then my 2nd premolars out (all 4 at once) on another visit and the premolars didn't cause as much pain as the wisdom teeth.
how is the site of the extraction looking? Is this your first or second premolars?
Hope it gets better soon.

When I first went for a consultation with the oral surgeon he told me this would be simple compared to my wisdom teeth extractions (the 4 of them were impacted). Those extractions only hurt for one day.

I had the first premolars extracted, I am not so sure how the extractions sites are supposed to look but I don't think the are infected, the gums look pink and there is what looks like dark blood in the middle.

Thank you, I hope so too.

Even with the pain, I am still very excited about getting my braces soon.

Hi about a month ago I had a molar extracted and I was in pain after three days and went back to my dentist and I actually had a dry socket and he had to pack it with some medicated gauze. It was a throbbing sensation and the pain med was not working until he packed it. I had my wisdom teeth pulled back in 04 and had no pain at all and was eating like the next day with no problem. When I had this molar extracted I was living off of baby food for at least two weeks. I am also 26 and just got braces and next week I am getting my 1st bicuspids on the lower arch extracted and I am so scared bc I do not want to go through the pain I went through about a month ago. I hope you get to feeling better soon, if not I would go back in and make sure you do not have a dry socket because the pain for a dry socket usually starts 3-4 days after the extraction. Please keep us updated on your progress.

I had a completely bony impacted wisdom tooth, and a molar removed a couple of weeks ago. Three days off work totally drugged up and that was it. Except my face was swollen and bruised for days. But no problems--especially not after 5 days....have you been taking the pain meds and antibiotics as directed? If the oral surgeon won't see you early next week and you still have problems, I would go to my regular dentist to get an opinion. I hope for you that it isn't dry socket or something serious.

Hope you get well soon!

I guess we are all different, when I got my wisdom teeth (all 4) pulled 12 years ago my whole face hurt for about a week, and my cheeks and jaws were so bruised I looked like someone had beat the crap out of me. BUT, I don't remember ever having just one spot in particular happening. I never had dry socket, thank goodness, I've heard it hurts bad. Hopefully you can manage on the pain meds until they can see you. Did a little google-ing... found this website on dry socket that may help http://www.mynewsmile.com/dental/dry_socket.htm if worse comes to worse you can always go to the ER. Hope this helps.

A "dry socket" occasionally happens with any tooth extraction. There is not a whole lot the dentist/surgeon can do to prevent it. It happens sometimes and is indeed painful.

Hi, thank you for all your responses. I am feeling a lot better, I haven't taken any pain medicine I am not in pain anymore. I am so happy, the extraction sites look they are healing well. I was so worried that I would get a dry socket.

Thanks again.

NICURN85- Good luck with your extractions next week.
