sharp wires totally sticking out and cutting me!

#1 Post by margarets »

So, after a few days of cut-up cheeks and multiple applications of wax, I finally pulled my lips way back to see what the heck is going on with my back brackets.

What I see is a thick but short wire, it looks like it's holding the archwire in the bracket, one end is bent over so it won't touch my cheek, but the other is sticking right out. I don't think the tech even attempted to bend it. Both sides are like this, and both have a sharp edge. I could have punctured my finger on them when I was poking around back there.

This can't be good ortho tech practice, can it? The previous tech put "donuts" (elastics I think) around the back bracket and I had no problems whatsoever with cutting cheeks.

Either way, I'm going back and insist they fix this (along with my hideous staining power chain).

It's possible that the wire wasn't sticking out when you left the practice. Pokey wires are a sign of movement and sometimes it can take only a few hours for teeth to move enough that the wire starts sticking you. I had this happen after my last adjustment and had to go back two days later for it to be cut.

I agree that if they are really causing you that much discomfort, go back and get the wires clipped a bit to relieve your pain.

I had this many times. All was fine when I left the adjustment appointment but over the next few days a wire at the back would really poke so bad. I couldn't get wax to stay back there and most of the time just stuck with it and somehow after a few days the pain went and no more poking... weird. If it continued I would have gone back to get it trimmed though.

yep- go get 'em clipped or filed.

I had brackets placed on upper molars two weeks ago & the wire is already poking thru.. so I will be getting it trimmed next week.

I have been having this issue too. Some days they really bother me, and then other days not at all. It's weird. I only have one little packet of wax so I'm rationing it until I go back next Thursday and can ask for more.
