Hygienist following debonding - advice please!

#1 Post by sibilla »

I've just been to see my dentist to discuss some work I need to have done post braces and she has said she wants me to see the hygienist when they come off - despite my ortho complimenting me on my oral hygiene each time I go for an adjustment...

Is this normal or am I being ripped off?? My understanding from posts on this site is that the ortho pretty much cleans them when the debonding is done?

Hey Sib-Well, My ortho's not cleaning my teeth--he will clean the glue off etc., but a hygienist cleans under the gums, all over--much more comprehensive cleaning. I think it depends on your ortho's set-up. Mine doesn't have hygienists etc. It's all ortho only. I will be scheduling a hygienist cleaning for the day I get them off.

Good hygeine doesn't mean you shouldn't go in for a cleaning. I know it's a pain but I'm sure they just want someone to do a good scraping around your gum line and between your teeth to make sure you're totally free of calculus.

Thanks for the replies - that's really put my mind at rest...

After the cleaning comes whitening, then some 'tidying up' to put right all the damage done to my teeth by my bite being off for so many years....

All getting very exciting now!

I am still unsure of what the cleaning will involve when my ortho removes my braces but agree a visit to a hygienist afterwards is a good idea. Unfortunately I wont be able to do this as at my dental practice there is a 6 month waiting list to see a hygienist. Absolutely ridiculous.
Braces: Metal fixed upper and lower
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months
Braces Removed: August 2013 (after 33 months in braces)
Retainers: Upper & lower essix and lower bonded

The practice I go to sees both NHS and private patients. I pay NHS fees but the £17ish I pay for a check up only includes a simple clean. To see the hygienist there it will be £30-40+ for the clean. They also said I have to have a referral from the dentist before I can see the hygienist but cannot get the referral from my dentist until my check up appointment which isn't until April so that means my cleaning appointment will be in 14 months time... I know it sounds a complete joke . My previous dentist office didn't have a hygienist so this is all new to me but the waiting times are extreme. I might end up having to find a new dentist.
