Yowza! The wire change pain!

#1 Post by jessieg »

Ho-ly! This is the second time I had my wire changed. The first time I was like, huh, I feel nothing. But today....oh my gawd the pain. It feels worse than the first day I got my braces on! Is this normal?
Also, the wire didn't go all the way to the back of my mouth to start, and as of today it does, and that's where I always chewed. I'm so back to square one between the wire pain and the fear of eating and breaking the wire! I'm stuck! No free teeth anymore to chew with! Can't say I loved today....

Hi - yes when I had my wires changed, I can really feel the pressure so there was a lot of pain. I notice that I always feel the pain more on the 2nd day. I can't eat any hard/crunchy food, not even cereal. But after a few days, it does go away for me.

Well the good thing is you know your teeth are moving with all that pressure and pain. :)

Exactly. Pain means movement, so pain is good...to a degree. Good luck!

I may not know much about teeth (or most else for that matter) but I do know about Spacers For Braces.

Wow! Jesse, I would have written the same thing you did, exactly. I had my first wire change since getting top braces. I'm only 8 hours into it yet. Not looking forward to tomorrow. But so glad things will be moving more!

I just had my bottom wire changed two days ago to a thick( not sure on size, 18/25?) rectangle wire....WOW, this is my most painful wire change yet, so yes it is normal. Just like everyone else is saying, pain is good.

I still can't chew anything, but the pain is now more dull like. And the teeth feel numb. I've experienced this before during the last year with my bottom braces, but it's been a long time. Super soft food for me!!

The road to straight teeth is a long one, but we will get there.

Do you mean there's no anesthetization?

Nope there isnt any involved with getting braces.

Unless you have to do fillings or extractions performed by ur general dentist.

The wire change itself is not painful (just pop two pain killers before you head to the office and you'll be fine). You start to feel the pain hours afterwards. The pain only lasts a few days, but it's a rough few days!

I know the feeling!! Just had my second adjustment yesterday and they had to fiddle around a lot. Plus I have this small tooth stuck behind the rest and they're pulling it forward and the pressure is insane. They're also pulling an impacted canine through and there's a lot of pressure on my teeth. Luckily as I only have the top braces on (for now), I'm only getting the pain on my top teeth. Buuut I'm getting my bottoms on next week and I'm not looking forward to having my whole mouth in pain after wire changes.

Buuuuut it's all worth it and the pain is a good thing!

I have my first wire change coming up on the 9th of Oct. I'm not worried much about the pain, but I hope they don't take away my white wire and give me a metal one.
