Retraction Opinions Please!

#1 Post by CLB26 »

Hi everyone,

I have been at this for a very long time and have had a lot of problems (see other posts if you want a back story!). I am now in braces for a third time and to say I want this to be over quickly is an understatement.

I am booked in to get spacers on the bottom on the 17th and bottom braces on the 23rd. I already have upper braces. We are trying to retract my upper arch, which means we have to retract the lower arch as the lower teeth are in the way of the upper teeth retracting. He is putting spacers in so that he can more easily shave my teeth down (he is shaving between my teeth to create space for the teeth to retract).

In order to speed up this process, rather than push the bottom teeth back and then wait until the next appointment to push the top teeth back (which I have had done in the past), is it possible to just push all the teeth back at once? I know that I just have to ask him and see what he says but I was wondering what you all think of this idea. I am just thinking that this would literally save me an entire month and a half worth of treatment since I wouldn't have to wait that extra 6 weeks for my bottoms to be retracted before retracting the top.

What do you all think?

Yeah this is possible, I'm having both arches retracted together, we used molar build ups (like cement on the bottom of my top molars to stop my top teeth bashing brackets on the lowers.
Brace Date: 14th April 2011
Estimated Debrace Date: 14th April 2013
Real Debrace Date 18th June 2013

4 extractions, upper ceramic brackets and lower metal to fix overjet and overcrowding.

Thanks, Kenny! I am relieved to hear that somebody else is having it done this way. It makes me much more hopeful in speeding this process along. Now all I have to do is get my ortho to agree to do it this way! I really don't know why he has been doing it one arch at a time. Maybe it allows for more precision? I'm not sure but at this point I am not worried about things being 'perfect' anymore, I just want to be done and have things be functional! I will suggest molar build-ups to him if he mentions my teeth hitting each other being a potential problem. I've had molar build-ups before and they're really not a big deal.
