I know it's silly but concerned with face shape change

#1 Post by Violetxox »

Hi everyone
I just wanted to apologize in advance for any errors I make, I'm new haha.
It seems a horribly stupid and vain thing to be worried about but I got my braces fitted yesterday and I'm really worried that my face has become a lot wider or fatter in appearance. I don't have a particularly chubby face but my face shape has always been a concern and an insecurity for me. I was wondering whether anyone else had experienced a change for the worse in their face shape after getting braces and whether it could just be initial swelling or whether my face will be wider for two years.
Sorry about the silly concern

My mouth was swollen when I first had my braces. My coworker told me, and I quote her, "You look like someone straight punched you in the mouth!" However that initial swelling has long since vamoosed. There have been other facial changes but I chalk them up to the fact that I have had four extractions.

Haha thanks :) I'm sorry about your mouth but it gives me a little lift to know that it might just be initial swelling :)

If you've only had braces for a day they wouldn't be affecting your facial structure yet. When I first got braces on my lips got really pouty... I was vain and I enjoyed that lol. At this point, initial swelling is what it is.

Lucky you! I've always had rather large lips. Most people say they're full but I think they look out of place with my face being so small. When my braces made them look bigger… well let's just say I wish I had your reaction! Hahah

I honestly haven't even noticed a facial change with all this expansion. My appliance has these horizontal bars about a centimenter, maybe 2, long, that run parallel to, but not quite contacting, my gums. I think it is to keep my face muscles from pressuring my teeth inwards. So my cheeks are a little fuller with it in, but when I take it out they look normal. But I see no changes to my face and I've felt crazy amounts of tingling and pressures in my nose, cheeks, roof of mouth...I don't thinkporthodontia does much to change the adult facial structure unless there's some type of surgery involved.
