My chin too pointy
I noticed that after having the braces on (and I'm in my retainers now) my teeth are too much oval (meaning there is no curves in the teeth until right at the border with the front teeth) and that makes my chin pointy and my jaw protrude forward making it clash with the front teeth and make it awkward.
Is this a common problem/mistake that orthodontists make?

It may be that that's the shape of your jawbone, and now your teeth match it for a long-term, stable result.
You can get surgery on your chin to reduce it's profile. An Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeon would be able to evaluate you for this.

What do you mean reduce it's profile? The pointy chin is not the main problem, the front teeth clashing is which I believe happened because of the teeth being narrowed and the jaw becoming longer. I'm guessing that reducing the chin profile would not help with the inside of the mouth, but only the exterior appearance.sirwired wrote:It may be that that's the shape of your jawbone, and now your teeth match it for a long-term, stable result.

I was guessing that if this is a common problem that unskilled orthodontists make, I could sue him and have it done rightly by another? Are there any successful suing the ortho stories? Does the paper you sign at the beginning of the braces contract prevent you from suing? (I'm guessing it probably has something like 'you may not get a satisfactory result but you agree that you'll live with that')

Your teeth affect your lips and smile. (i.e. a tight smile, toothy or gummy smile, your lips not meeting, or the lips protruding) If your teeth are upright, lined up in a nice, neat, row along the arch, well seated in the bone and gums, and occluse well with each other, your ortho has done his/her job.
Your ortho can't do anything to your chin or jaw; he/she can't make it better or worse. Your palate and arch are part of your skull, not something the ortho works on. If you are dissatisfied with their shape, that's for an OMFS to correct.

while I agree with what you have said in general, the bite can and is affecting position and angulation of the lower jaw and chin. Long story short, I was class I on both sides, and after having some dental work done one side went wild, my teeth moved and now I am class II on that side. I must say, I see a change in my chin. It used to be more pointy, and now it is more short (parallel to the ground) and a little retrusive. I need to say that this change is not drastically affecting my face cosmetically, but it did happen.
I of course know nothing about PursueToTheEnd's case, but from my own experience I may try to guess that he/she was a class II that became a class I as a result of an orthodontic treatment. When teeth position change from class II to class I, the jaw naturally moves a little forward and down, possibly creating that pointy and protruding look. It does not chage the bone itself, just its angulation with the upper jaw. I personally think this is normal and I can't wait to start elastics to correct my overbite/class II. I am looking forward to having my pointy chin back

Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

Basically I lost that square jaw look which is characteristic of the male face.
And it hurts my jaw joints to support my head with my hand now, probably because of this pointy chin ruining the ergonomics of the jaw.

Simple solution: If you liked the way your teeth were and were happy with how you looked before you got braces, remove your retainers and allow your teeth to resume their previous positions.
Otherwise, either return to your orthodontist to express your concerns or go to another one for a second opinion.
