My gap is slightly bigger than yours, I feel your pain on the smiling closed mouth, but I bet you don't have that problem anymore :)
@Jungle Julie. The gap has 99% gone a very small sliver left as the teeth are touching at the top but not fully at the bottom. By the time the teeth are contoured and the smallest amount of bonding you would never know. I am really just waiting for my right canine to move to close a gap and then I'm done-February at the latest they should be off (I don't think the gap will close by January-the left side has practically closed but the right is taking it's time!)

People that I don't know very well, ask me 'why did you get braces, your teeth are straight?'. I never know what to say. It always catches me off guard. My teeth are so not straight but I must hide my bottom teeth quite well when I talk and smile ;)

Nope, no one. My teeth are terrible and it's blindingly obvious. A few people asked why I was getting braces because they hadn't seen my teeth but once I showed them, they agreed I was making the right decision.

I would never base a decision like this on what other people's opinions were though. It would be something I would do for me, because I wanted it.

Yes, most people I tell that I am getting braces don't understand why. I have fairly straight teeth, but I hate the gap between my front teeth. And by the way I am getting it for me not everyone else :)

Nope no one ever said mine looked fine :p

I didn't tell anyone not even my significant other until after I had spent the $$$ on down payment and was already braced on the top.

When an old friend asked why I had gotten them, the answer was simple. I could afford it!

I've had a couple people ask why but I suspect they didn't notice how crowded my teeth are. The only person who said my teeth look fine is my husband. He insisted they were fine (but was also supportive about getting braces) but after the braces went on, he's changed his tune to "it needed to be done". ;)

Oddly, not long after posting in this thread, I told a friend that I'd been braced and she said "but your teeth look fine"! I then put my teeth together and showed her how much of a gap there is between the top and bottom teeth at the front, how crooked the bottom teeth are and told her that when I bit down, that only about 3 teeth come into contact, making me a very inefficient chewer.

I'm 45. I have a rotated tooth on top and on bottom, and enough over crowding that teeth are twisting even more out of place. It's been getting worse over the years and I've become aware of them to the point where I thought, just fix it and stop hiding your teeth. They aren't bad to other people, but I am very aware of the movement. I can afford it right now, so why not just do it?!

I've had an incredible backlash to getting braced. I've had them on for a month now, and didn't 'warn' anyone first, other than my boyfriend and a couple of close friends. When people saw me they were mostly astonished, though some were supportive (my friends). My teeth are 'fine', according to everyone else. I don't 'need' braces, or so many people felt the need to tell me.

At an extended family Christmas party I had a lot of people ask why I got braced, and I said I wanted perfect teeth. That, apparently, wasn't good enough for them, and I got quite a bit of negative feedback. It hurt for a few moments, then I remembered I'm doing this for ME, not for them. If anything it empowered me to be tough with the haters. Seriously, if their lives are so empty that they can spend a whole Christmas party picking on me about something so small, then they are just sad people. My boyfriend (it was his family, not mine) heard quite a bit of tsk tsking as well. Silly people. Really. It's just silly and small minded.

After a month of wearing the braces, I can see significant improvement in the location of my teeth. I'm over the moon. I don't regret it for a minute. I will have amazing teeth in a year or so. I'm excited about it. The haters can troll someone else.

Well, apparently most people did think I had decent teeth. Some are very confused as to why I chose to spend money on braces.
I am so confused.

I'm assuming it's because I don't show my teeth much when I talk. I actually dated a guy many years ago that thought I had perfect teeth. I'm so deceitful.

Most of my friends don't understand why I'm getting braces and having jaw surgery. My top teeth don't look terribly crooked, but I do have crowding on my lower teeth and I have a 7-8mm overbite and overjet. Even though I have an overbite my chin isn't weak. It actually sticks out too far. I feel embarrassed by it in every picture so I assumed everyone notices it too. Maybe my chin sticking out too far offsets the look of the overbite. Either they're just being nice or they don't think it's as big of a deal as I do. Even after I explain that the overbite causes me to clench and grind my teeth at night which gives me daily headaches, and that my molars don't touch each other when I bite down, they still give me crazy looks.

Hi Mary,
I can completely relate with you. My teeth were actually fairly straight before my braces. My bite was off and I had developed some pretty strong TMJD issues and a bite that was off, although not obvious to anyone but me and my dentist. I had constant spasms in my face and neck, I actually had a stuffy ear for over a year, ear pain and significant hearing loss... all because of my TMJ disc that had slipped out of place and pushed my jaw back into my ear. My molars don't touch well either.

I'm in braces for me. I've learned that it doesn't matter what others think, I'm doing something important for myself. My health is important to me.

Good for you for persuing your braces too.
