I have a large midline gap too. I hated it as a child and we could never afford braces. Then at some point, it stopped bothering me so much and I was fine with it. When I was younger it wasnt as large either. I've had some extractions and gradual teeth shifting that happens w/age and now it's about 4 mm wide. I'm only 33 so, I know it will continue to get wider and I'm not cool w/ that. Everyone that knows I'm getting braces, with the exception of my mom and sister, has asked me why am I closing my gap or has either said they like they gap and I shouldnt close it. Actually, the gap isnt the only issue. I also have an overbite/deepbite as well that I hate. My 2 yr old daughter has a mouth exactly like mine so, I anticipate her getting braces as well at some point...most of all my boyfriend DOES NOT want me to close the gap..he loves it...oh well, it's going bye bye along w/ this overbite! lol
While I haven't gotten braces yet, I've definately wondered the same question. Am I going to regret it... am I going to miss it? When I talked about getting braces, I got the same comments from people too... "Oh but we like your gap." or "I think your gap is cute!" My sister said that last one, and I asked her "yeah you think it's cute, but would you actually want one yourself?" and she said no. One of my friends did reply that she did sorta want a little gap when I asked her that question.
When I actually just made the decision last week that I am going to get braces, I told my sisters and mom and while I hoped their first response was something encouraging and helpful (because I really tend to second guess myself on everything!), they all said they were going to miss the gap. I said "heck, I might too! But don't make me second guess myself." They said it was the fact that they were going to have to get used to me with a different smile.
I think it will definately be different for us and the people around us to get used to our different smile. But you know what, it's going to be so beautiful so who cares! It's such a minor thing when you really think about it, but it's made a difference in our life somehow that we want to make a change. No regrets! It's going to be a great outcome!

I don't really care what others think cuz I have to be happy with my appearance.
But I really loved it and others too...
Its so weird lookin at my smile and not seeing it. I was sorta sad when it closed up so fast.
But I've gotten used to the "no space" feeling...it took time but I'm there lol...
He ortho didn't Say the space wud get bigger but he did say that if I don't get my Frenelum removed it cud reappear lolz.
Hey Nikki, I wish I love mine too, then I would not have to shell out the money I am about to spend. lol I pray I get the opportunity to get used to that "no space" feeling because I have not a clue how it feels to have your front teeth touching.
Are you going to have your frenectomy so that the space doesn't reappear?
Yes i am supposed to....
But we'll see how money runs when im done with my ortho treatment....
