Braces on top only first?

#1 Post by BracesChick »

I've noticed that a lot of you got your braces on the top teeth first and then after a few months on the bottom. Why is this? I'm not sure if this is what I'm also going to have.

when my son got braces the reason they did the tops first then the bottoms is because they had to wait until the bottom braces wouldn't hit the back of their top teeth before they could put them on.. they opened up the arch and pulled their top teeth back first then put the bottoms on.

your orthodontist didn't outline your treatment plan when you had your consultation after the molds and xrays and such? Mine said they would be putting both top and bottom on at the same time since they didn't think my teeth would hit each other (lovely huge overbite i have) so they will be able to work the top and bottom from the beginning.

My tops are going on first because I have an overbite and a bit of a crossbite. The ortho wants to get my teeth moving on top before fixing the bottoms, which are just crooked. If you go to YouTube and type in adult braces and spacers, you will find my video blog (under Jeanette). I talk about it a bit more

I had a lot of arch development that needed to take place on top first.

I was already wearing a mandibular repositioning splint on the bottom when I started treatment. I kept that splint and had it cut back a molar at a time to encourage those teeth to erupt while my upper arch was developing. I also got brackets on my back lower molars during the first month so I could wear elastics from back molar to upper canine at night. I've worn that configuration the entire treatment.

Lower braces on 10.75 months into Phase II treatment.
Duration in braces: 2 years, 2 weeks, 5 days
Removal of Braces: September 18, 2013

TMJD treatment now complete!

I have a deep bite so my ortho had to wait for it to open up before I could get bottom braces on. I should be getting them in about 2 hours along with a bite plate.

My front teeth overlap my bottom teeth, so wonder if they will do the same for me. Although it's my bottom teeth that are more messed up.

My upper teeth covered about 80% of my lower teeth on my right side. Yours don't seem that bad in your picture...maybe you will escape the dreaded bite plate.

My uppers need a lot more work than my lowers, so my ortho put in a lower lingual arch to hold the lowers in place while he moves the uppers. Eventually I'll have brackets on the lower arch too, but not until he's done moving the uppers.

32 yr old guy from Boston

Upper Ceramics on 6/19/12
Lower Ceramics on 3/25/13
Braces off on 9/23/14

Original estimate of 16 months treatment time - ended up at 27 months.

I started treatment with a deep bite and also my upper front teeth slanted inwards, this is the reason why I had only my uppers put on at first. I got my lowers nearly 3 months later. If I was to have had both arches wired at the same time, my upper teeth would hit on the lower brackets.
Braces: Metal fixed upper and lower
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months
Braces Removed: August 2013 (after 33 months in braces)
Retainers: Upper & lower essix and lower bonded

My top teeth are going to require a bit more work than my bottoms. It's just a hot mess up there!

I had the top on first then the bottom on 8 months later.
This is because I have a deep bite and a crossbite.

Even when i had the bottom put on my top teeth kept breaking/knocking the bottom one so I ended up having a 'stopper' put on one tooth at the side so i couldnt close my mouth properly.

Had that for about a year and had to learn to chew on that one tooth/stopper (arghs)
Eventually, about 3 months ago they took the stopper off as they said it might be stopping my teeth from leveling out and within a month or so my bite became much better and now my teeth dont clash, Yay!

Just waiting to book my op date now...but it feels great to have teeth that are starting to fit together like a normal person!

I got my top braces on first, too. I got them on Jan 2/13 and hope to have my bottoms on in another month or 2. I have crowding on top (and bottom) and some arch development needs to happen before there is room for my bottom ones to go on. At least that's my understanding of things so far! :)

I got the top done only because the moron who booked my appointment only booked a half an hour for me because they thought I was going in for a tightening. But Im going in 4 weeks to get the bottom done.
