Hey guys, I'm new!

#1 Post by carlarae »

Hello! I'm Carla. I'm 26 years old. I have wanted to get braces since I was about 18 (but knew I always needed them before that). I used to browse this forum around that time, as well. I feel like there were more active members back then, but hopefully I can get the same kind of support here! I have been on youtube constantly watching braces videos, and constantly researching every little detail.

I'm getting traditional metal braces on April 23! Spacers a week earlier on April 16. I would already have them on by now but I have a few cavities that need to be filled and they couldn't fit me in until 6 weeks after my exam, so that was irritating.

My main issue is my overbite. My arches are pretty good; I have a little bit of crowding/crookedness, but my main concern is my overbite. My top teeth completely overlap my bottom. I'm almost skeptical that it will be able to be fixed. I've heard about bite plates/bite turbos... and I don't think I can get the plates on the back of the front teeth because I have a root canal on a front tooth. But that's what I actually WANT. I feel like that will give the best results.

I've looked at every overbite video there is. From what I understand, to fix this, they super-erupt back teeth? My ortho is putting molar bands on the upper second-to-last molars, regular brackets on the bottoms. So what will they do with the very back molars on top? Don't they need to be super-erupted as well?

As soon as I have enough posts, I'll post my pictures and the beginning of my journey. I have some decalcification from not having good oral hygiene as a kid. So I guess I'm glad I never got braces, because I wouldn't have taken very good care of my teeth, and I probably wouldn't have worn my rubberbands, like most kids I knew! I was an avid coke sipper up until March 4 which was my most recent dentist appointment with a new dentist. She gave me prescription fluoride toothpaste, so that must mean business! Now I only drink coke when I go to movies.

Anyway, does anyone have any info about fixing overbites? Did anyone have a big overbite that is now being corrected? (I'm not talking about overjet either, that sounds easy to fix with rubberbands) I've seen before and after pictures of overbites, but they're usually kids. I guess it's just hard for me to grasp HOW it's fixed!

Hi and welcome to the board :)

I wish I had some info for you, but I don't. One of my 10 year old twins has a severe overbite to the point where her bottom teeth grind and cause infections on her upper palate behind her top front teeth. She's had molar buildups for a year already and those will stay on until she is braced in the next couple of years. I'm not sure other than using the braces, exactly how it is fixed though.

Good luck with your journey and I'm sure you'll find loads of support here :) The forum is pretty active.

I have an overbite. I didn't realize it until I got a dentist who cared about such things and the orthodontist heartily concurred, my overbite is classified as severe. I actually don't know how they are going to fix it. I am currently in top and bottom metal braces. No molar bands (yet, not sure if I am getting them, I hope not.) One rubber band on the bad side--my bite is a bit skewed, I guess. Then I will have a TAD also on that side. Everything else seems straightforward. No one mentioned erupting any molars or anything, but obviously every case is totally different and unique.

Welcome! Congratulations on taking the first step and I hope your appointment for your braces goes well.
I also have an overbite ranging from 80%+ on the right to 40% on the left. My lower teeth were starting to irritate the gums behind my upper incisors and my upper and lower teeth were also eroding each other by the constant friction. My ortho put braces on my upper jaw only in November and told me I'd need a bite plate in a few months time. Well, the braces worked very well and I avoided the bite plate. My overbite is now less than 20% (normal) on the left and about 50% on the right. She put brackets on my lower teeth in Feb. She used ceramic brackets and shaved them down so my upper teeth (on the right) wouldn't hit them.

Welcome, I too have pretty good arches and an overbite/overjet? it is pretty severe and I wish I would have stumbled onto this forum before I had them put on. I have so many questions that I want to ask, yet I had my braces put on 2 days ago. I had a few extractions and the plan is to push my top teeth back. The ortho said I would be in rubber bands at some point but not for very long. I hope everything goes well and good luck. I went with clear braces on top and metal on bottom. I thought I would be self conscious with them but I find it the exact opposite. I was always very self conscious of my teeth but now feel like I could care less as I know that they are being fixed and the braces show that I care about my dental health.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Good luck. I will be getting braces on April 11th and also a rookie to this site. Only slight overbite/overjet to fix, along with some crowding. My biggest challenge I believe will be the food limitations!

Hi to everyone I am new as well! Just got braces two weeks ago. Got the six month smiles...have an over bite, crowding, lateral incisors are in with my canines sticking out slightly! My teeth are in so much pain, the metal brackets are scratching against the back of my mouth and causing extremely painful sores! :( Did anyone else here get the six month braces? :)

I'm so sorry you are having such a hard time. Use wax and lots of it. When I've something rubbing, I put wax on after I've brushed my teeth in the evening to give my mouth a solid 8 hours relief. Have you tried salt water rinses? They can help too.

BTW, from your user name, I'm guessing you're from Limerick. I'm from Cork originally.
