molar brackets vs molar bands.

#1 Post by rania »

Im a 2nd time braces wearer. I got ceramic top and bottom. I got the top done 5 weeks ago. And thr bottom ones done yesterday. This morning while eating waffles my bottom right last molar bracket snapped off. I was able to go in after work and get it put back on.

The 1st time I had braces I had bands. But this time around I got bracket molars (not by choice). I scared now that my molar bracket is going to fall off again. I don't understand why he didnt put molar bands on my back molars so I dont snap it off again.

I havent had this problem as i just got braces in January and had my molar bands put on a few weeks ago.

My suggestion is to ask them to put the bands on at your next apt. Can't hurt to ask!

Good Luck!! :)

I have brackets not bands. I have had one bracket fall off the very back molar, but it was in the chair while he was trying to put a new archwire in. He glued it back on with a bit of extra glue and it's not been a problem again. I think I'd rather just have brackets, much easier to clean around.

I got molar bands put on my bottom molars today. My ortho used them rather than brackets because of the type of fillings I have in those teeth. I have brackets on my upper molars but one came off earlier this month. My ortho glued it back and said if it comes off again, she'd have to put a band.

I have brackets on my molars (molar tubes) and I´m one of those pt that eat even hard things like carrots, caramel and hard candy with my back teeth. They still hang on and which they have done since day one (I wonder how debonding will be if they still are glued this strong to my teeth  )

One reason why molar tubes more easly fall off is because it´s more difficult to keep it dry during bonding back there and if it´s not dry the bracket will not stick that well to the tooth.
Those teeth take more force while chewing than other teeth too.

The most common reason to use bands instead of brackets is because of fillings on the side of the tooth; the cement won't adhere to anything but enamel.

Certainly if you pop it again, that'll be a good reason to use bands, but otherwise brackets are by far, preferable. Bands may require more work to put on (if you have a crowded bite, you'll need painful spacers), and the potential for decay is higher vs. brackets.
