I was told by a casting director that my teeth were stopping me getting jobs (I'm a singer).

On the other end of the spectrum, people have said they didn't notice my teeth were crooked before braces.

So I went with the side of the guys paying my wage!

Generally speaking ZERO people comment on my brace until I bring it up. I haven't even had people look twice at them. It's bizarre...
Debraced on Friday 20th September 2013!

Loving my new smile :-D

This is one of those thoughts that come into your head, but your internal brain filter stops it from exiting your mouth. This was my initial thought of what you should have said.. but probably glad you didn't.

In response to "

"Don't be mad when you look less pretty without the gap" (x_x)"

My initial thought of what you should have told them:

"Don't be mad if people think your an ___________ for your arrogant attitude."

Nothing negative on my end yet. Closest was when I was talking to my 11 yr old about getting them, he said no way as they make people look nerdy. (before he knew I was getting them.)

When I have bad day and my teeth hurts even when speaking or have mouth sore I lisp, speak indistinctly, then people ask me to repeat
the worse part is I'm a teacher and some days I have to speak a lot - it dry my mouth and make things even more painful.
I'm debraced after 2 rears and 1 weak of treatment.

I didn't realize my speech was affected until my husband surreptitiously took a video of me talking to my daughter on the phone describing a waterfall as a "waging towent."

Sounds like you should break out the camera for a video of him snoring.

Probably my mom: "ah... the things we do to look pretty". As if the *only* reason to get braces is to improve one's appearance. I was/am self conscious about my smile but the larger reason for me is confidence based.

Oh dear, I'd find that a little annoying. Many, many adults don't get braces because of appearance but for health reasons both physical and mental. Stay strong!

My mother and daughter asked me if I was too old to have braces. That hurt my feelings.

No way, you are a spring chicken!

Being a bit older as we are (I'm way older) does present challenges. More dental work in there to work around. Crowns and other work present a challenge for attaching brackets. I'm sure there are other issues that are different than if we were fifteen, but it doesn't mean we are "too" old, just that our teeth and everything are older and that must be taken into account for our treatment.

The amazing thing about this topic is it was started on Tue Nov 01, 2005 1:16 am. I posted to it Mon Feb 25, 2008 2:51 pm. Without a doubt this is one of the oldest threads of any forums.

For all of you reading this dealing with the hassles of braces, today is my third anniversary of debracing. I will tell you it was worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

MIke
I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.
But who's counting?

Thanks for praying for me and thinking happy thoughts.

I was actually just noticing this topic has over 10,000 views! The initial post in 2005 takes the cake. What an ignorant "professor." What virtue or value is there in NOT making teeth function properly? Would this professor say the same thing about someone with a curved spine? To these types, looking your best or trying to is some kind of sell-out. And, furthermore, to assume orthodontics is all about looks is truly unintelligent. We all must wear :paperbag: so no one is at a disadvantage.

I can relate it to someone with glasses. Do we tell someone those glasses make you look ______________. No. Braces fall into the same category.

Resurrecting an old thread ...

A "friend" asked me whether it was a bit late in life for me to get braces . I am 51. I did feel a bit annoyed about it though. He is in his 60's with not such great teeth. I replied that you are never too old for braces!
