Cleaning the nance button

#1 Post by rhibee83 »

Hi Everyone!

I have read a few old posts about nance buttons and I have had mine for about a week and half now, getting used to it, it is still weird to eat and use the teeth that have the molar bands on but I will get there.

Anyway, my question is, should I be trying to clean under the nance button? It seems very pressed against the roof of my mouth, not sore or anything, but I am pretty sure no food is getting under it, only liquid i think. I have read that people try to clean under it with floss or waterpik, but to be honest, i didnt even think of cleaning under it! I just clean the outside of it by running the toothbrush along the roof of my mouth.

Can someone please give me any info on this? it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)

I'm sorry--I don't know anything about the nance button. If you don't already have a waterpik, you really should invest in one. I've already gone through 2 of them. They seem to get the most difficult junk out from under and around all types of crevices and devices.

Good luck!

its ok not many people seem to have one :(

it is attached to my molar bands and the "nance button" sits on the roof of my mouth and metal wires attaching to the molar band. It is used as a space maintainer as i had my top premolars out, it holds my molars in place so that when the braces go on the top front teeth move backward into the extraction holes and my molars stay where they are as I have an overbite. if that makes sense! lol

People have said they get food stuck under there nance as it just rests on the roof of the mouth. I am pretty sure I havent had food stuck in mine yet but people say they try to clean under it and I have never tried i wouldnt be able to fit any floss under it etc and fear I will make it not as tight.

I have a waterpik though and it helps clean my molar bands :)

Yikes, that sounds uncomfortable? Do you have to wear it for the duration?

Yeh I think I have to wear it until my overbite is gone? I am getting my brackets on 5th April and archwire in on 10th April. So i dont even have my braces yet lol. I also just had 5 extractions! so day 10 of healing for those so not going to bad,but I only got the upper lingual arch and nance button in 2 days before extractions so i havent really had time to get used to it. I am getting used to it a bit now and my speech is getting back to normal (apart from a lisp) and food gets stuck in the archwire of it kinda like a washing line lol, but i am getting there. Spose its just gonna get more annoying with braces lol.

I just got my nance removed today!!! After 4.5 months.
I always just brushed it when I cleaned the roof of my mouth with my electric toothbrush. My dentist and ortho both said that it was always clean when they saw it and I never had any irritation after the first couple of weeks. Tried to floss under it once but it was just impossible. I think brushing and a vigorous rinse does the job!

I didn't find the nance affected my eating much other than I avoided sticky foods or things that would clump around the roof of my mouth. I can finally suck on sweets again (bad habit) now that it's gone which is great as I'm suffering morning sickness at the moment and a few sweets help!
It's great having the nance gone!! I can't express how good it is. But it really seems like it was worth having as the ortho thinks that it really did the job and hopefully has helped to speed up the whole process.
Good luck with yours, it won't be long!

Ahh yes. Ye ol' nance. I remember it well. I'm not sure how long I had it.. I think I blocked it out of my memory lol, but I did write about my entire experience with it in my story somewhere. The first few days after I got it (which was a weekend so no ortho to help me :( ) the roof of my mouth got reeeaaallly swollen and, as you know, there is noooo room for that nonsense with a nance! I'm still not sure if I had something stuck under it or what, but I went out and bought a waterpik and it was SUCH relief! I used my waterpik every day because I would get skeeved out thinking about the bacteria and sugar and old saliva that probably just nested up under the button. Not to be gross.. but for me, there would sometimes be a little smell when I flushed out from under it (Barf!).. Honestly, it was like a morning breath kind of smell so I figured it was old saliva. That's what really made me invest in the pik.

You'll get used to eating with it and soon won't really notice it. It just kind of becomes a part of you. Although, I remember I used to kind of try and suck on mine because it feels like a jolly rancher stuck to the roof of your mouth lol. The day it comes out is amazing though! And you forget how wrinkly the roof of your mouth is compared to that button. It's kind of weird.

Good luck! Time will fly! I can't believe it's been over a year since my nance was removed!

I know what it is! I don't have it yet but Im getting a CD Advancer (expander) in a few weeks. It has a TPA and Nance Button, as well as four molar bands & buccal expansion springs. I think it gets cemented to the back of your front teeth also. Sounds like it's going to be a mouthful.

The product spec sheet says to clean the Nance section by sliding a piece of floss underneath it. I dont know how achievable that actually is! Supposedly if you dont, the skin underneath may become red & abraded. This could be a bit of overkill, I dont know yet!

thanks JumpTheDitch :)

well i have never cleaned underneath it , i dont seem to get anything stuck there (YET) anyway. I just got my braces on TODAY hehe so maybe when my teeth start moving maybe the Nance will move and stuff might get under it, i am not sure.

Ortho didnt mention anything about the nance looking bad or anything so i guess it is ok! thanks for your information though :)
