It is one thing that is puzzling me and I haven't had a chance to ask my orthodontist this question, but HOW does an archwire connect to the molar band?
I have read a few people's archwire has popped out of the little hole in the molar band, and i am worried if it happens to me.. ALthough, my orthodontist said to me that the archwire on my lower arch will bow at some point before my first adjustment (in 4 weeks) I am assuming this is because the molar band is on the molar closest to the extraction hole and as my lower arch is moving forward and back at the same time, this will cause it to bow when the molars move foward and canine's move back. so I am guessing there is now way my archwire can accidently fall out.
I have tried to google how they are attached etc but i cannot find anything. Are they clipped on somewhere behind the molar band? it has been driving me nuts trying to figure it out hahaha its probably a very simple answer!
They just slip through a little hole on the side of the band. Mine has come out a few times on both sides it takes awhile to maneuver it back in- I usually end up using tweezers
If it ever comes out you can kind of tell where its supposed to go

I wonder where the pressure comes from then if it is just threaded in a little hole and not really clipped on or anything? weird! but thanks i hope mine don't end up coming out!
You should be fine! Mine only come out because the arch wire ends at the teeth with the molar bands on (far back molars aren't 'engaged' yet, i think that's how my ortho referred to it haha) and I've got gaps at the front of them so when I chew on the sides it pushes down on the wire, pulling it out
I hope that makes sense? I'm terrible at explaining EVERYTHING and now the more I've read it, the more wrong it seems...
Lol! It makes sense cos that is exactly like mine! My archwire ends at the molar band and the back molar behind that is not bracketed yet also the molar band is near the extraction tooth so the wire goes over my extraction hole straight into the molar band! Lol I have rubber tubing on my archwire over my extraction holes so that it doesn't cut my tongue!
haha i'm glad it did!. I thought it was strange that it had been done like that but if you're the same it must be normal lol but I already have the brackets attached.
hmm the rubber tubing may stop it from bending so much that it could come out? I don't have anything on the left side which has a gap from a tooth I had out a long time ago and the right has the open coil spring which I think has almost hit its peak, so there is less arch wire
Yes, the rear bracket is always a tube. (It's actually rectangular to provide twisting torque on your later archwires.) The tube (vs. the tie wings or self-ligating brackets you have on your other teeth) provides some "slack" in the wire to accommodate an expanding archform. (Imagine how often the wire would pop out if it was just normal tie wings!) Nevertheless, sometimes the slack isn't enough, or there's enough of a gap before the next tooth that bends pull it out. It won't be a problem past the very thin and flexible iNiTi archwires. After those come out most of your gross movement is done and you'll eventually go to thicker and less flexible wires.

Thanks sirwired. So basically the archwire is just placed in the little tube and not really screwed in there or anything, its amazing how it all works! hehe
thanks all for your help! as my molar band is right near my extraction gap, i will be careful not to bite on the gap so that the wire doesnt pop out! how annoying! but so far, so good *fingers crossed*
