sensitive teeth all of a sudden.

#1 Post by d0minic »

6 weeks into braces, was perfectly fine yesterday but when i woke up today, i realize a sharp pain at my bottom right lateral incisor and canine whenever i drink cold water and my premolar hurts even with room temperature water. anyone experience sensitivity to cold and stuff during your braces treatment?

Indeed, and it's so disturbing because we are conditioned to think when we feel pain in a tooth that there is something wrong that needs attention asap. With braces, it seems as if what was once a red flag is the new normal. Based on my experience, it should resolve, but if not might need to see if anything untoward is going on.

Well, since it's that painful, maybe you should contact your dentist or ortho.

If you are in that much pain, I think you should see either your dentist or ortho. Some pain is considered normal but it sounds like you are experiencing more than "some".

I had/have this pain as well. It started fairly early in my treatment and I experienced it the 2nd time I had braces (this is my third and final time). I posted a thread about it. I get very sharp shooting, zingers as I call them. And they are extremely painful. My dentist and ortho are not concerned with it. The nerves get sensitive from the movement. I bought Colgate sensitive toothpaste and its working like a charm. It the toothpaste doesn't help after a couple weeks, I'd call your ortho or dentist. :) I am going to keep using that toothpaste throughout and after treatment. I've had sensitive teeth my whole life but the braces really aggrevate the problem.

went to the dentist for consultation. says it's due to my extraction of my premolar causing the gums around the area to recede exposing more tooth. gave me a fluoride treatment on the area and off i go. it cost me 50bucks for the consultation and treatment. burning a huge hole in the pockets. =(

I think when you get braces, you have to recondition yourself. I have never called in about "weird" stuff because I figured it probably isn't really weird at all. It always gets better. If days passed or something was completely unbearable...I guess that would be different.

But your teeth are probably going to do all sorts of odd things before treatment is done.

Buckle up for the ride! :) Good luck.

i'm not going to dentist just because it's weird. it's so painful that i can't drink water without a straw. and the pain area was where i had my extraction a month ago. was afraid something was happening at the extraction site. so yea, just to have some confirmation nothing's wrong.

Hey I had this weird pain last night and thought of your post. I was wondering, when you got the pain, were you eating something warm and then drank something cool? That's what happened to me... and it's on my canine. It didn't really feel like sensitivity but more like pain that moved up into the roof of my mouth sorta. it was totally weird and I was just curious if I got the same thing as you. Though I just drank something cold (with not warm food) and I didn't have the pain.

nop. i just drank cold/room temperature water and it would sting me in the jaw. i had receding gums due to braces and extractions so that suck. i'm not sure about your. you can ask ur ortho when you have ur adjustment. good luck! =]

I had sensitivity in one tooth since the New Year. I told my ortho last week and she told me to come see my dentist. I did. Turned out that it had moved exposing a tiny section of root. It will be moved back again when the tooth in front of it is moved into its correct position. My dentist put some sort of coating on the exposed section of root and the sensitivity has completely vanished. If you have sensitivity to hot and cold, I suggest you see your dentist.

yes, I get sensitivity to cold all the time. Cold water, ice cream, even cold air will cause a sharp twinge of pain. I HATE it. I now carry OraGel with me everywhere and use it when I need to. It seems like a tooth will get sensitive for a few days, then go away for a couple of weeks, then come back for a few days, then go away...etc. I'll also drink room temp water when I have to on days like that. My ortho said it was normal when teeth are moving and roots are being exposed, but he didn't seem concerned either.

This whole idea of what would have been a red flag (unbraced) is now a new normal (braced) hit the nail on the head. It's only day 4 in braces for me, and the idea of tooth/mouth pain being ok is such a weird thing to accept!!!!
