If you hate your diastema...
I suffered with a huge diastema my whole life. A diastema that has been ever-expanding since I was a pre-teen.
Suffered. I mean really suffered,.
When I would forget that I even had that awful space, someone would inevitably rudely remind me, or a picture would shock me back into reality. I was never asked out in high school, never smiled in pictures and rarely every took them. I know I sound dramatic, but having a gap literally ruined my self esteem, and led to a self-destructive path of not caring about myself. I became an emotional eater as well and packed on about 40 extra pounds. As an adult, I just stopped caring about myself and my looks because I realized that I could never feel confident with the gap in my mouth. Even though I am relatively attractive, despite messed up teeth.
I always dreaded never getting married, or getting married and having that gap in my wedding photos.
Its like having body dysmorphia- I never really felt that the gap was "me"
In January I vowed to change myself, inside and out. I began working out and eating healthy. I really thank God that I was able to get braces, that was a part of my wellness plan also. I have had them on for a little over 2 months and since then my gap had all but closed (only an extremely tiny sliver left)! I am so elated at this point. I know this is "only the beginning" as my ortho would put it. Also, I have also lost 35 pounds since January and I feel absolutely blessed!
The irony of this whole gap situation is that : my family didn't even notice that the gap closed! Nor could they recall how my teeth actually looked. Then when I showed them my before picture of my teeth, to my chagrin, they all began to make rude comments about my gap and how large and unattractive it "was". Yet when I was on a quest to get braces, most of them had originally discouraged me. :-/ That is truly strange and sort of hurt my feelings. I wonder what they really thought about me when I had the gap *shrug*
I suppose the point here is that you have to do what is going to make you the most comfortable. I believe we only get one life, one experience on this earth and it is not to suffer or feel bad about ourselves. If you are unhappy with your teeth for whatever reason (or anything about your appearance or personality) and you have the power to change it, you should. Do not let anyone persuade you, because for all you know that person could be lying to you about how they really feel concerning your appearance.
All the money, pain and time put into having braces is definitely worth it, so if you have a diastema and you are on the fence, I say take that plunge. I have taken more pictures in the past week WITH braces on and minus the gap than I have in the past 5 years. I am even thinking of doing some modeling in the near future.
I had to get many, many fillings and an extraction of a front lower incisor... that was incredibly traumatic for me so this had not been an easy journey so far ...went through lots of pain...but it has only been 2 months and I can already see that my life is changing before my eyes.

Re: If you hate your diastema...
I can't believe it's closed up so fast! That's amazing! I'm kinda jealous because they haven't started closing mine yet.
Re: If you hate your diastema...
That's so fast, congratulations! You must be delighted. It is great to read taht you are not only fixing your teeth but changing your diet and becoming a healthier you!
Re: If you hate your diastema...
That is a really inspiring story! I totally agree with you, you have to do it for yourself not for anyone else. I had some similar feelings to you about my overcrowding and I agree I have smiled more since getting braces than I did before because I hated my teeth so much. I used to look in the mirror and try to come to terms with how they looked but I couldn't. I'm so pleased now that I finally decided to get braces, I only wish I'd done it ten years earlier! Good luck on your journey and well done for getting healthier too!
Re: If you hate your diastema...
I 1000% agree with you. Highschool was a nightmare on my self esteem. I would always walk with my head down and mumble when I spoke, because I didn't want people to judge me based on my teeth. It was horrible!
But you know, since being braced and seeing my diastema close and my teeth straighten out, I'm a totally different person now. My self esteem has blossomed and for once, I feel beautiful.
Congrats a healthier you as well as a boost in self confidence. That's wonderful! As we continue the braced journey, things will just keep on getting better.

Re: If you hate your diastema...
This is SOOO inspiring to hear. There are many within our society who take a "God/Nature made this way, so why change it?" approach to our diastemas......
While that is all well and good, I think I was also born on this planet to be truly happy and having braces has overall made me a happier person. When I was younger and my gap wasn't quite as large, I smiled all the time. However, I lost my smile & self confidence as the gap and overbite grew more destructive....
Today while getting fitted for molar bands + getting my power chains replaced and connected for all 4 of my front teeth , I was in so much *** *** pain I swear I had an out of body experience. I was looking up at the fluorescent lights going "WHY THE HECK AM I DOING This!!!".When I looked in the mirror afterwards, it's just SO worth it. I just feel more adult, sexier, fiercer I think I might tackle public speaking next. That ALWAYS used to mortify me since I felt people were just staring at my teeth

I can't believe it either! I didn't notice until I accidentally brought up my before pic, then looked in the mirror. I was like O_Obeckyboo0205 wrote:I can't believe it's closed up so fast! That's amazing! I'm kinda jealous because they haven't started closing mine yet.
The only drawback of my diastema closing so quickly is that I now have a temporary underbite until he starts to retract my lowers. Its okay with me, since I can hide the underbite but could never hide that gap.

Thank you! I am elated! I also started working on my self on the "inside" ie: being a more positive person, praying, meditating, etc. I am starting to learn that wellness is a total package!

I would look in the mirror and try to come to terms as well. funny thing is it always looked so much worse in pictures, than in the mirror...busy bee wrote:That is a really inspiring story! I agree, I wish I would have had this done 10 years ago. I often think about how things would be different, but I am SO grateful to have this opportunity now. Never really thought this day would come lol
Good luck on your journey as well Keep us posted

I felt incredibly awkward in school If i pass these genes on to my future kids, I vow that I wont make them go through high school with a diastema! I feel like a different person as well Much more confident

Me too! And you know what the irony is? I had an ortho tell me a long time ago that the more I smiled, the faster the teeth were moving apart! Isn't that hilarious!?
Take solace in knowing that the pain is temporary and WORTH it! I had plenty of moments in which i asked myself "why are you doing this to yourself" before i actually saw progress, but once you see a difference you start to welcome the pain LOL
And its funny you should mention public speaking because I have been thinking about that too lately.

Amen! I also have diastema and hope to get it corrected with braces, among other bite issues. Thank you so much for posting your story, and I'm glad you're feeling more confident with yourself!

Re: If you hate your diastema...
I completely agree with you! Even now when my orthodontist takes photos at my appointments to show how much the teeth have moved it almost makes me feel disappointed because they look so much better when you look in the mirror than in photos. I think it's because photos can't lie. It's all good though and really exciting seeing movement!junglejulie wrote:
