impacted wisdom tooth and braces

#1 Post by BracedSG »

i'm about to embark on my braces jourmey, but I have recently discovered that I am having 2 unerupted impacted wisdom tooth on my bottom row through the routine xray.

Just wondering if its wise to proceed with my braces treatment as what my orthodonist has recommended and address the wisdom tooth issue later on.

I think you should consult with your ortho. I had all my wisdom teeth when I started (recently had one extracted) and he wanted them to stay.

Good luck!

I asked the same thing...no one else seemed to have an answer
I had the problem of money saved for Braces. But not braces and oral surgery, it was one or the other.

My lower wisdoms are impacted. Years ago my dentist had my uppers removed but not the lowers.
Now at 42, the complications aren't worth removing til they cause a problem (if ever) So says my dentist and ortho.

I've had my braces for 9 mo. now and everything for me is ahead of schedule :D

There is quite a lot of controversy on this topic. Several orthos I went to said that unerupted wisdom teeth do not impact on orthdontic treatment, but the one I am currently with said that it does. I had all four of mine removed before getting braced. They were all unerupted and pointing side ways, although had no pain. Since having them removed I have defiantly felt less pressure in my mouth so maybe there is soemthing in it.....
Started treatment to correct open bite non surgically

I had one erupted wisdom tooth on the top left, that one came out. the other one is top right and that is impacted near my sinus. He didnt want to take the one near the sinus out as they could of damaged my sinus. he is hoping that once my teeth start moving, it might erupt. But for now, it is still there :)

I do not have any bottom wisdom teeth and will never get any :)

Have you faced any complication or difficulties with having your wisdom tooth extracted during the braces treatment? Sorry for the noob question :D

It seems to depend on the state of your wisdom teeth. Whether they're erupted/impacted. Or causing you pain/issues or not..

When I started my orthodontic treatment, I had all 4 of mine. My ortho suggested I get all 4 removed so I did.
They would cause me pain from time to time and make my gums swollen but I don't know that if my orthodontist hadn't suggested removal if I would have done it. All 4 of mine were erupted or partially erupted.

Hi
I would defiantly ask ur orthodontist because I know with mine I had to have them removed before they would proceed with the braces
My teeth were very impacted however and I had them quite young (I was 15 when my dentist first said they would need to be removed) I had all of mine removed and my braces put on within about 8 weeks
Good luck :)

This was my experience too. I had the top ones removed about 10 years ago but my bottom ones were impacted and I decided at the time to leave them. As far as I could tell they weren't causing me any problems but when I had them removed last summer before I started orthodontic treatment, I suddenly felt less pressure and I noticed that the point where my lower jaw changes angle (mandibular gonion) was no longer tender (it was only very slightly tender to start with). On a side note, my white blood count fell quite bit and I had normal levels for the first time in ages. There was a low grade infection that was symptomless and not picked up by 3 different dentists in 2 different countries.
