Completely confused about resorption. Help?

#1 Post by smootie »

I am getting ready to get adult braces soon (yay), and am spending as much time as I can doing research so I can make informed decisions about my braces.

I'm having trouble with "resorption". I know what it is, but there is conflicting information about what causes it.

Some people say it is caused by teeth being moved too fast. Other people say it happens when people have braces on for too long (which I take to mean that their teeth are being moved too slowly). It seems like I will be in trouble either way if this is true!

Am I just misunderstanding what I'm reading?

Thanks all!

It's caused by the movement of teeth; it happens to some degree in a lot of ortho cases, but is usually not severe enough to be a problem. I don't know if speed has anything to do with it.

Deminerilzation is what happens when braces are on your teeth a really long time; 100% perfect care is nearly impossible, and the longer the braces are on your teeth, the greater chance you'll develop deminerlaized spots.

hi I was told by my dentist not the orthodontist that resorption happens when the movie teeth too far through bone - if they have to move them a long way.

Thanks, this is good to know. I think some of my teeth have to go a long way, so I will be sure to ask my ortho about them.

Correct me if i am wrong but i always thought resorption was the natural process of tooth movement due to ongoing process of both osteoclast and osteoblast.

The osteoclast/blast process involves the supporting bone structure from your jawbone that cradles the teeth (it's the "miracle" of braces, and why braces usually don't cause gum recession.) Root resorption is different.
