49 & braces AGAIN!

#1 Post by Calgal »

New to this forum but not new to braces! My three kids all had braces and I had them when I was about 12. My kids teeth all look amazing, so I decided to have the orthodontist assess my teeth. My original treatment was ok, it did make my severe overbite and overjet better, but I've still been dealing with those two problems for many years. My braces were put on my teeth three months ago! I'm now wearing elastics and will have an Advansync appliance put in soon (ugh).
I was never afraid of what people would think of me doing this, and I'm totally prepared for it to take a bit longer than the estimated time given. One thing that's annoying is how many people (amateur orthodontists) have told me that I didn't need braces, or asked me why I did this?? Just get dentures when I'm older!! That's the answer!! Haha! I've taken good care of my teeth and they're in great shape and I want to keep them. The added benefit when this is all done will be my new awesomer smile!! I can hardly wait and I'll probably cry when they hand me the mirror!

Welcome to the boards. There are quite a few of us on our 2nd round and there is at least 1 person on their 3rd. I also had braces as a kid but wasn't told to wear a retainer, apart from a few months when treatment finished. As a result, my teeth relapsed and I ended up with a deep bite again.
I have also met quite a few amateur orthodontists who have told me that I'm crazy and it is a waste of money since I'll need dentures by the time I'm 60 anyhow!

I will be 60 in 4 years and I haven't lost any teeth yet. Neither of my parents have dentures and they are in their late 80s, although they have had many problems with their teeth and had poor care as children growing up in difficult situations during the depression, they have managed to avoid what many people seem to think is inevitable.

I've been told that having braces helps many people extend the life of their teeth.
