i know ceramic brackets are slightly bulkier, but is the actuall portion that attaches to the teeth any larger, or is it about the same?

Hi chrisd! I'm not sure whether it larger or not but I have 2 peg laterals (which a pretty thin teeth) and my ortho was able to attach ceramic brackets to them without a problem.

The ceramic braces are bulkier mostly in how far they stick out, not really on the bonding surface. You'll notice that the "full lip" look is more pronounced for those with ceramics.
