High calorie, healthy, brace friendly foods?

#1 Post by mrben123 »

Hi all, brief introduction – I’m 25 with standard braces and will be having some maxillofacial (jaw) surgery at some point :)

My problem is that I’m quite active so need to eat throughout the day. Before braces this was easy. I’d just keep a bag of almonds or pistachios handy and there was no problem.

Does anyone know of any high calorie, healthy, brace friendly foods? So far, peanut butter is the only thing I’ve found really does the job.

Mix cooked white quinoa into whatever you're eating. It ups the calories, protein & fiber and adds Omega fats (I forget if it's 6's or 3's). I'm struggling with trying to keep my weight up (for the first time in my life), and still eat healthy. This helps. Brownies aren't exactly health food, but I eat them, too

A healthier alternative to peanut butter is fresh ground almond butter. :) LOVE the stuff, and it is good for you too (for when you just can't chew almonds... which is a lot of the time ...for me) I used to eat almonds as my "go to" crunchy snack... alas... not anymore since braces....
Also the quinoa like that last poster suggested... extremely good for you. Great pasta substitute, high in protein and fiber, and low in bad carbs. :)

I have a Blendtec blender and I blend a double recipe of this shake before work every day and take it two two jars:

Natty PB 1 tbsp
Whey Scoop
Oats 1/4 cup
Banana 1/2
Chia seeds 1/4 cup

There's 550 in that; 1100 for two of them! Great way to get healthy calories. If you don't have a Blendtec or similar blender you'll have to pre-cook or soak the steel cut oats.
