Hi all,
I'm 8 months into braces, and lately my dentist started filling in the gaps made from premolar extraction. He is not very happy with the speed the teeth are moving, and complaining that I take too much painkillers. Of course i do take panadol after meeting him for few days as it hurts like hell!
My question is is there a connection between panadol or any other painkillers and teeth not moving? If so are we doomed to go through the pain without any remedies? :(
Thanks...
Over the counter painkillers affect teeth movement?

I have no idea, I've also never heard of such a thing. I would say if you are supposed to be wearing elastics do it. Don't take them off because it hurts. A doubt Tylenol or equivalent would affect teeth movement. But then again I am no dentist

My ortho told me to take painkillers if I needed them.
I looked up about painkillers and tooth movement and found this:
http://www.slideshare.net/jeanmichael/b ... nt-4776905
Slide 91 said that the dose level for NSAIDS such as Ibuprofen or Aspirin do not impede tooth movement. It also says that acetaminophen (Panadol, Tylenol)) is better since it does not reduce inflammation.
So unless you are taking very high dosages of painkillers (which is very bad for your liver, btw) you should be ok.

Thanks for the updates. My ortho was like 'its an absolute crime to take panadols' smh...
No I do not take high doses, i just took 250mg panadol when i sleep for the first 5 days. Anyway I decided to endure the pain this month and see if the ortho is happy with the movement... worst two days gone :)

Strange! I think many people here have been told that painkillers are ok. From what I've read, 500mg of Panadol per day for 5 days should not impede tooth movement.

Speaking as a chemist, absolutely no issue with taking painkillers on your teeth. Stick to the guidelines on the packet however as you can damage your organs and cause other health problems by taking excessive doses. If the pain is so bad you feel the need to be exceeding over the counter doses, you should be contacting your orthodontist to discuss as that is not appropriate for any period of time.
