Can someone explain power chains to me?

#1 Post by Marigold »

I've had a power chain since practically the beginning of treatment on either the uppers or lowers. I always thought the purpose was to keep the teeth evenly spaced so the elastics wouldn't create gaps. Was I wrong?

I have a tiny gap between my front lower teeth where the ortho did IPR a few months ago. It didn't close after my last adjustment which I assumed was because of the power chain. I had my next adjustment last week and he said my braces can come off in 5 weeks. I pointed out the gap to him. He said don't worry, he'll put on another power chain to close the gap :?: That didn't make sense to me, but I didn't say anything because obviously he knows what he's doing. However, it's now been 5 days and the gap hasn't budged one bit. Doesn't even feel sore there. I'm worried. I have 4 weeks to go and I want that gap closed so they can come off. Do I not understand the purpose of power chains? Can someone enlighten me?

Your ortho is correct: the purpose of power chains is to close gaps. Ask him to possibly put double power chains on. That is what my ortho did and that stubborn gap in my lower two front teeth finally closed! Congrats on almost being done! I still have a surgery and another year or so in braces...

samoorelaw and your ortho are right... the powerchains are meant to pull teeth together and close gaps
