What are TADS?

#1 Post by 28monthjourney »

Hi! I'm a bit new to this forum (and most things related to braces) and just got the basics of what I'm going to need at a consultation yesterday.
They mentioned that I was going to need TADs, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice relating to how they feel, how much they cost, what exactly they do, etc.

Temporary Anchorage Device. It's a metal screw that is screwed through your gum into your jawbone and used as an anchor point for a spring, wire, or band. They are used when the ortho needs to apply a force to your teeth and either needs to do it from a direction where there aren't teeth, or where the "equal and opposite reaction" you remember from physics class would mess up that other tooth.

Their insertion is usually quick and done under local anesthetic (like what you'd get to fill a cavity.) Once installed, they might be sore for a couple of days while things heal, but nothing horrible. Their cost to you should be included in your treatment plan.

Sometimes orthos put them in, sometimes they farm that out to a local oral surgeon.

Thanks for the info :)
Is there any particular reason an orthodontist would rather have an oral surgeon do it?
Sentence:
28 months in full upper and lower braces, open coil spring for additional alignment space for permanent teeth to erupt, elastics to align back bite, bite turbos, and palate expander.

I have an open bit I will be correcting with TADs. One ortho said he would place the TADs himself, and the second ortho said he has the periodontist do it. The second orhto just did not have the tools or training. Basically, he just hadn;t taken the weekend course and invested in the tools becasue he rarely uses TAD's. therefore, i selected the ortho with the long list of patient photos with nice before and after pics with the TADs.

DO NOT LOOK AT VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE REGARDING THE APPLICATION OF TADS!

I made that mistake when I began my braces treatment and luckily I didn't need TADs but I never got over the videos. Very cringe-worthy

I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!
