Gingivectomy to widen smile? Pros and Cons?

#1 Post by GeenBug »

I've recently started considering this procedure to widen/expand my smile. I know it's mostly done on people who have a gummy smile or gum disease. I don't have either; I would just like my smile to bigger. Two of the receptionists at the Dental office I went to had the procedure done and they were the ones who suggested it to me. I'm just wondering if anyone has had the same thing done and what the pros and cons are for a gingivectomy? Any long-term effects on the teeth/gums? According to Dentists I've gone to for consultations, after checking my teeth they all say I've very healthy teeth :D, so I don't want to do anything that would ruin that or affect my teeth/gums negatively in the future. Would you do something like this for aesthetic purposes only?

Here's a video of the procedure:

Crazy as it may seem, I actually wish I had more gum! I had braces on previously and somehow had receding gum line on my lower front teeth and had to have a gum graft from the roof of my mouth.... Awful, awful pain. Had the procedure done like 5 years ago and the roof of my mouth is still sensitive.... Well I have braces on yet again and even though my dentist says my gum line is healthy, I feel like they are slowly receding down again. Not in between but on the actually teeth. I looked into the procedure you're thinking about, and honestly I would say just rock your smile as it is. You never know what the future holds for your teeth. They may need those gums and if you take a bunch away you might be needing it back! Not saying you will! But from my experience its not enjoyable. :( And I understand you're in a different situation as mine, but you do what you feel comfortable with! And I hope you receive feedback on this procedure!
Second round of braces. 2007-2009 and again in August 2013.

If it was me, I would not do it. Why mess with a good thing if you are happy with your smile? Especially if other dentists tell you that your teeth are healthy. I have a friend that has gingival problems and he would give anything to have more!!
