Yes, it does hurt. But it's manageable.

Metal braces will work faster. But if you're concerened about the way they look, get clear ones.

If you're concerned about how your teeth look, you should get them. Chances are you do, since your dentist recommended them.

Good luck.

Hi Marco and welcome. Getting braces put on does not hurt. However, for a few days following, your cheeks may get chewed up some from the brackets and your teeth will be sore. This is managable as Shinyam stated. I take Ibuprophen when my mouth hurts. I use wax on brackets that chew up my cheeks. After a few days you will be fine. You will be eating soft and / or liquid foods for about a week, but that time line depends on the individual.

Most people say metal braces are easier and less painful to remove. I have Damon 3's, and have had many of them removed due to my system making a lot of tartar and messing them up so the doors won't open. (They are self ligating) It has never hurt me to have them removed.

Read some of the old posts and you will get plenty of information to help you with your decision. I wish you well.
Had Damon 3 / Smart Clips for almost 2 years

Overall, braces do not hurt. It's just annoying at first (especially the change in diet for a week or so), after that it's not so bad. I got metal ones because they work a little faster and chose the Damon's because compared to the traditional my ortho uses, they were much smaller. He did tell me that it may take a little longer if I used ceramic. I wasn't concerned with my appearance, so I chose metal. The one good thing is that people sometimes think I am younger than I am---which is always a good thing. I have been very happy with them and would be happy with any braces now that I look back at it. Anything is better than my old smile. Good luck!!! Let us know what you decide.

Marco,

You should go to the main ArchWired.com page and start reading. The topics under START HERE will tell you everything you want to know.
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

Hi, Marco,

I agree with reading old posts. I learned alot, which helped me feel better about my decision.

I am 49, and just got top braces yesterday. So far, it has just felt alittle funny, and I feel a dull ache in my front teeth, that Advel has taken care of.

Just take it one day at a time.

It depends on the person. I had no pain or problem with my braces. I encourage you to get them if you're ortho is suggesting it. You'll never regret it once you're done!
