Has anybody ever asked to keep their braces on for longer?

#1 Post by CuriousGuest »

I have my last follow-up appointment with my orthodontist next week, before getting my braces removed in mid-August. I still feel like my teeth are not totally perfect, I have one teeth in the middle top that is not completely straight. My top and bottom teeth are not perfectly parallel, I mean the line in the middle...

I was wondering if anybody has ever asked their orthodontist if they could keep their braces on for longer than the initial treatment period? Most of my friends said their doctor always delayed the removal date because they're perfectionist, I even have a friend who had his braces on for 5 years, when he was only supposed to have them for 3 years... This is not the case with my orthodontist though...

I really don't want to get them removed until they're perfect...

I've just delayed my deband by another 6 weeks because I have a slight black triangle inbetween my front and lateral incisors, I want my teeth as close to perfect as possible! You're paying a hell of a lot and have already invested so much time/energy/pain, what's a couple more months was basically my reasoning; once you get those suckers off, they're off, so you may as well be completely content with your smile - you will be living with it for the rest of your life after all! :) Don't let the ortho take them off unless you would be happy with those minor imperfections forevermore

I would ask for more time if you're not satisfied. I would hate to spend all that time and money on braces and then be unsatisfied with the result.

I had a friend that was told 2 years and she ended up having them for 3 years.
07/14/14 - 4 spacers put in
07/25/14 - braces top and bottom put in minus 2 molar bands that they couldn't fit
9/11/14 - 2 spacers put in between the bottom back molars
9/19/14 - last 2 bottom molar bands in and all hooked up, new wire, started elastics too
10/14/14 - new square wire change and thick elastics
04/24/17 - braces removed!!!

I had my first ortho appointment today and my ortho said I'll need braces for 14 to 17 months. I really hope it doesn't turn into longer than that... even though most people seem to have braces longer.

I had my appointment today and I am keeping the same date to have my braces removed. They shoudl be off in a month!

I talked with my orthodontist and he said the tiny gap in the middle top cannot be completely closed because of the shape of my teeth, it can't be changed. However, he gave me new elastics and I have to wear them a different way, the top and bottom should be perfectly centered by then... Hopefully! At least this is something that could be fixed.

My treatment was supposed to last 24 months, I will have had them for 26 months by August... So it's not so bad...

My treatment was estimated at 12-15 months and I've now had my braces longer than 19 months. It seems to be the norm that treatment takes longer than estimated. Boo.
