Braces coming off too soon?

#1 Post by ejverx »

I have had braces on for almost 3 years now, and I have an appointment to get them removed in 4 weeks. However, I don't think they're ready to come off. My midline is off (shifted noticeably to the left), and I still have quite a large overjet. However, my ortho x-rayed me on our last appointment, and noticed that my roots have become a lot smaller. She is now concerned for my teeth, and wants to take the brace off ASAP because of this. She has also changed me from red bands to green ones so not to put too much pressure on my teeth. This has so slowed down the process of fixing my overjet. Is there any way I could keep the brace on for longer, or would I just be damaging my teeth too much? It's annoying that I've gone through all of this to have a result that I'm not happy with.

If there is root issues it is better for the braces to come off I would think. I would go along with my Ortho, but express my concerns and listen to his/her reasoning. Better to have imperfect teeth than implants and damaged teeth.

I found this interesting so I Googled it and read this. http://www.gregjorgensen.com/blog/2013/ ... h-shorter/ Did your orthodontist explain why he/she wanted to remove your braces? I would be disappointed too.
07/14/14 - 4 spacers put in
07/25/14 - braces top and bottom put in minus 2 molar bands that they couldn't fit
9/11/14 - 2 spacers put in between the bottom back molars
9/19/14 - last 2 bottom molar bands in and all hooked up, new wire, started elastics too
10/14/14 - new square wire change and thick elastics
04/24/17 - braces removed!!!

That's what I was thinking. They're still better than before treatment so I guess that's something.

She just said that I could be at risk of losing teeth if the roots become too damaged. I wasn't aware this could be a side effect but from research it seems it can be. I wondered if there are any treatment options for an off midline and an overjet other than braces, but I'm at a loss :(

I got my braces off last year after 2yrs in them. Almost every single person in Archwired who was in the last couple weeks of treatment with braces was unsure that their teeth were ready..I know I wasn't sure at all....I was soooo surprised at how great they looked when the braces came off. It is really hard to see what your teeth will look like debraced while you are still in them....just try to trust your ortho...Good luck!!
