Any idea if I am no longer getting Forsus springs?

#1 Post by Weezy »

My orthodontist never tells me anything about what he is doing. On my first appointment 2yrs ago I was told I would need the forsus appliance to fix my overbite and was shown an animation.

I had 2 upper premolars taken out and 2 yrs has been spent moving my top teeth and filling the gap.

I had an X-ray last week and was told I could begin my final stage once he saw the xray. It was sent via email so I never got to see it as he didn't show me today.

Today I went in and he changed my wires and told me I now had to wear elastics and I was shown how to wear them. I have to wear the left side all day and add the right side at night as well until my appointment in 4 weeks. I didn't get the chance to ask about the springs.

Do you think I am having elastics instead? I feel upset atm as I honestly have been looking forward to getting the springs all this time.

Call the office and ask, or send the Dr an e-mail... it may be your case has progressed well enough that he no longer believes it is required.

Looking at pictures of the thing, I can't say I'd be upset about avoiding it!

I bet they are going with elastics now. I was told I may possibly need a forsus but he thinks he can do it with elastics and I won't need it. Maybe your bite is better and you can get away with just the elastics. I am wondering how long you have worn braces now? They didn't tell me when to expect to wear the elastics.
07/14/14 - 4 spacers put in
07/25/14 - braces top and bottom put in minus 2 molar bands that they couldn't fit
9/11/14 - 2 spacers put in between the bottom back molars
9/19/14 - last 2 bottom molar bands in and all hooked up, new wire, started elastics too
10/14/14 - new square wire change and thick elastics
04/24/17 - braces removed!!!

Oh what a shame :( I wanted the forsus to move my bottom jaw forward as now with the elastics I think my top jaw is being moved back as well. Or is this wrong?i. Have read so many bad stories about braces which makes me wish I never bothered in the first place :( I would call and email but I don't mind waiting until my next appointment.

I've had braces for 2 years. This is the first with elastics.

Wheezy, with all due respect, at this stage of the game I believe you should be asking these types of questions while you are at your appointment interacting with your Ortho. Have open conversations about your current state and desired state and associated timeline. It's easy for us to forget and I include myself, that we are the client/customer and have an innate desire and need to know.

I know but my orthodontist never gives me a chance to actually talk about my teeth and what he is doing! He will ask about everything but my teeth and then get straight into checking my teeth.

To those who have had elastics how often did you change them as I find now after having them for nearly a week that my teeth haven't shown any difference? I also can still move my mouth wide open after an hour or so of having fresh bands. Is this normal ?

Well, bands come in all different forces... from "I can barely tell they are there" to "I might as well be wired shut" (many jaw surgery patients get those).

I swapped them out after every meal (since they already came out anyway to eat) and at bedtime; I think that's pretty standard.

So I am still in the process of having elastics, with little change. I am wearing the left all the time in a class II position however he made my right side be the reverse. It seems it's in the class III position now which is weird since i didn't have an underbite. Since wearing them like that for a month, it seems I am getting more of an overbite now! Any idea why this is ?
